OG Law & Order's trick was that it would borrow the initial premise for an episode from a headline, but the actual story would end up going somewhere very different.

Instead they're doing almost the exact opposite, adhering to the exact contours of events ("THIS CHARACTER IS LUIGI MANGIONE, GET IT?") while having nothing to say about them.

They could be making great Law & Order right now without even directly mentioning MAGA or current events--just pick any of the 8,000 legal issues that have come up in the last year and make stories about them. Warrantless seizures, state vs. federal authority, etc.
