An absolutely incredible, life-altering record. Every time I listen to it I hear something new. But also: recorded in June and July, released in October! It was a different world...

Oh, definitely of "the left," but likely more Bernie than Bernie bro - on the right side (especially on class issues) but with huge blind spots.

Lennon? ABSOLUTELY a guy who would trumpet his lefty bona fides but crash out when asked to please stop using quite so many slurs.

As social critique, THE SUBSTANCE is on the level of an episode of TALES FROM THE CRYPT, but in a good way. And I do love a movie that's not afraid to go big (and wet). My favorite horror movie of the 2020s remains MALIGNANT, though.

Watched THE SUBSTANCE on HBO Max tonight. The MVP of the movie isn't Demi Moore or Margaret Qualley, it's director of photography Benjamin Kračun; the thing LOOKS incredible from first shot to last. But it's about as Not For Everyone as a movie can be.

Tell me your bagel order and I will tell you *based on NYC cultural expectations* if you have won or lost your election for political office in NYC.

One of my favorite things about NYC is whenever anyone runs for office here they are required to disclose their bagel order.

There's a song on the new Total compilation that made me think of that "Planet Of The Bass" video from a couple of years ago.

Today's newsletter is about the Moscow Composers Orchestra, a fantastically original 1990s avant-garde big band. It also includes a hint of what you'd get if you were a paid subscriber, so consider that.

I never want to listen to any of the bands featured in PEACEMAKER *except in the context of the show*, because the absurd over-the-top emotionalism of hair metal power ballads works perfectly when reflected in John Cena's ham sculpture of a face. (He deserves an Emmy for this show.)

You know that interstate crime spree you've had your eye on?

About a quarter of FBI agents are assigned to immigration enforcement, with the number climbing to upward of 40% in the largest FBI field offices, according to The Washington Post. Agents have been pulled from investigations into cybercrime, drug trafficking, terrorism, counterintelligence and more.

I found this paean to Chris Brown interesting, because I don't know any of the songs mentioned. I live in a universe parallel to the one where Chris Brown is a huge star. And I'm OK with that.

The singer claims he’s been overlooked, but his blockbuster stadium tour suggests otherwise.

Editors are not saints. I’ve had some great ones, and I’ve had some who’ve inserted factual errors into my copy.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Follow-up: Plant's got a good voice, as does Suzi Dian, who sings with him on most of the album, but this is the kind of pseudo-folk music that you hear on prestige TV series about Appalachian crime families. Not one song lingered afterward.

Gonna listen to the new Robert Plant album and see if I remember having done so afterward.

Listening to three newly reissued albums by dancehall vocalist Wayne Smith, all produced by King Jammy; contemplating an essay.

"Who writes great lyrics" depends on what you're looking for in a song. Depending on the day I might nominate Tom Waits, LL Cool J, Lana Del Rey, or a dozen other people. But I prefer instrumental music.

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?

Watched this last night after first seeing it on VHS 30+ years ago. It really is primo 80s Carpenter, meaning some of the best American horror ever made, and Keith Gordon is amazing in it; in the movie's second half, he reminds me of the returned soldier (Richard Backus) in DEATHDREAM.

The John Carpenter movie Christine is on HBO Max. The print looks like it was scrubbed against a cheese shredder. But it's properly letterboxed, and there are no ads. Hallelujah.
