I was in Oaxaca when federal agents invaded Los Angeles, where so many people from Yalalag lived or had family.

A surreal week with some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, people obviously not met with the same hospitality in the States.
I can’t help feeling like the level of friendliness towards a gringo stranger feels unwarranted. That same week, Donald Trump had just sent in the National Guard to Los Angeles in an effort to quell anti-deportation protests and bolster the efforts of ICE. Protests were only escalating to combat aggressive ICE raids in early June. The majority Latino community had resisted La Migra, some throwing rocks and physically blocking ICE vehicles while the federal agents beat and even ran over protesters with their SUVs. It’s a city where nearly everyone I speak with currently has family or friends living. Multiple people tell me they have family that usually would attend this festival but are not because they are afraid they can’t return to the States after. I chat with a handmade huarache shoemaker who sees my basketball shoes and asks if I would be willing to bring back a pair of Nikes to trade for one of his. I tell him I would try to bring some if I can make it back next year, and a guy walking by stops.

“Why are you here, gringo?” the man says.

“I wanted to learn more about your festival,” I say. “I play a lot of basketball back home and my friend wanted to show me how you all play here.”

“Well you can come here all you want, walk on our land, eat our food, and nobody stops you,” he pauses to spit. “But I can’t go to where you’re from. I’m not welcome.”

The man walks off towards the festival center without waiting for a response. The huarache maker tells me that the guy is just a crazy drunk, and apologizes profusely for him. I tell him it feels strange that more people haven’t said anything like that. He may be drunk, but he’s right.

I went to the mountains of Oaxaca 🇲🇽 for Yalalag’s Fiesta de San Antonio de Padua and saw how basketball brings together local indigenous communities every weekend. www.derange.co/p/basketball...

Apropos of nothing, Sec. Kristi Noem is currently praying over Burgerville with Portland ICE officials.
A screenshot of a video of Noem praying at a conference table with other people wearing suits. Fast food bags and water bottles sit on the table.

The lyrics in pop music really don’t matter. If you’re arguing about Taylor Swifts lyrics you’re basically the guy in line at the grocery store pointing at the cover of the National Dipshit asking the cashier, “is Rhianna’s baby really a tiny Bigfoot?”

Not only does this story get a number of basic facts wrong, it doesn’t take time to actually explore why Portlanders elected these folks. Coming in with a pre-baked PDX story to fit a NYT narrative about NYC is harmful, especially at this moment.

Read this thread from a great Portland reporter! The New York Times running this story today is absolutely calculated. It has been positioning Portland for years as a progressive villain. Also: why send a reporter from the Bay when the NYT has at least two reporters who actually live in Portland.

This article has a lot more important problems so I feel stupid saying this…but umm…the Mercury wrote and published the first major article about the DSA councilors back in June. Of course it isn’t the local reporting linked or mentioned here.

To put the @kellen.bsky.social NYT piece in Sacramento Kings terms. If Pre-School for All is stolen from the Portland people so the rich can get even bigger tax cuts, it will at best be remembered as the Tyrese Halliburton trade and at worst as drafting Marvin Bagley over Luka.

Waking up to some careless parachute journalism from the NYT. Really frustrating that @kellen.bsky.social chooses to write that "some top filers" have left Portland due to the Preschool for All tax but neglects to mention that the number of overall filers went up by many thousands in that period.+

lot of problems with that piece but here's one: if anyone tries to blame "empty downtown" on anything other than

1) the pandemic
2) ted wheeler destroying the big food cart pod so his developer friends could build a hotel no one uses

they're either a moron or a developer

I don’t want to hear anymore “Portland is dying” narrative or vague complaints about “ANTIFA” as the clarion call for action in the city. All of that led to Trump targeting us. Groups like People for Portland, associated right-wing media ecosystem, and political opportunists own this.

No offense but Dublin already has their own football, we don’t need to bring ours there (this is not because I had Warren on my fantasy team and couldn’t get him out of my lineup pregame)

Portland’s Sunday Parkways open streets program was inspired by similar events in Latin America. But the program is much more limited than the initiatives it was modeled after. @taylorgriggs.bsky.social argues that’s a shame, considering its potential to shift the paradigm.
