Portland Mayor Wilson says he's interested in taking over the lease of the city's privtely-owned ICE facility -- a suggestion that came from DHS. (And he rejects feds' ask for "free speech zones" where ppl can be penalized for protesting outside of.)

Who is Karin Immergut, the Trump-appointed federal judge who blocked national guard deployment in Portland?

Also, you'll see this is a screenshot by a video from a guy named David Medina. Medina was convicted for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection and was later pardoned by Trump. He has since rebranded himself as a Trump-aligned social media influencer.

Apropos of nothing, Sec. Kristi Noem is currently praying over Burgerville with Portland ICE officials.

Noem has with her right-wing social media personalities David Medina, Benny Johnson and Nick Sortor (who was arrested for fighting outside the ICE facility, Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office not pursuing charges). No news conference or opportunity for press to ask questions.

Portland city officials confirmed Tuesday that U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem plans to visit the city.

“When a Guardian reporter pointed out on social media that the image was not a genuine photograph of the generally small & tame protests outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Portland, the Oregon Republican Party’s X account replied: ‘We’re not reporters, just bad memers.‘”

“It appears the federal government is engaging in prohibited viewpoint discrimination by targeting demonstrators based on the content of their speech, while favoring those with whom the federal government agrees,” he wrote.

Judge Karin Immergut’s ruling capped a dramatic weekend that included President Trump sending California National Guard members to Oregon and ordering others from Texas.

Two things felt different to the ppl I spoke with who’d been protesting at the ICE building for months.

1st was the sheer volume of tear gas, pepper balls and flash-bangs used, seemingly unprovoked.

2nd was seeing so many videographers/live-streamers embedded with the feds as they marched out.

Hours after a federal judge paused the Trump administration’s plans to deploy 200 members of the Oregon National Guard to Portland, federal law enforcement officers escalated the tactics used on protesters in the city.

I’ll echo what everyone else has already said: Read and support local journalism.

Not only does this story get a number of basic facts wrong, it doesn’t take time to actually explore why Portlanders elected these folks. Coming in with a pre-baked PDX story to fit a NYT narrative about NYC is harmful, especially at this moment.

Apropos of nothing -- Portland police arrested and shot munitions at dozens of journalists in 2020. I don't remember a DOJ investigation then.
