The coming months I will be mainly taking care of my teaching and my mental health. I will not do interviews or lectures for a while. Please reach out to my many excellent colleagues instead.

No, but this is a well-treaded part of "soccer and politics" research. Book seems more about Spanish history than about Spanish soccer.

Far-right intimidation of "pro-refugee" mayors in the Netherlands has been a mayor problem throughout this century - with major peak around so-called "refugee crisis" - but continues to be minimized and treated as "isolated incidents" by much of Dutch media and politics.

Of the many books with short stories on the politics of soccer clubs, "Kicking Off Around the World" is currently my favorite. Very short stories, translated from Spanish, but a global scope and not only the usual suspects. Entertaining and light reading!

There is a growing cotery industry of books on "left-wing clubs". This is written by two old (school) British sociaists, who focus mainly on the usual suspects, but are more skeptical about their left-wing credentials than most other authors. Bit too much on drinking for me.

Great initiative about female soccer fans in Latin America. ❤️

This short book is the perfect introduction to both Yugoslav history and soccer for people who know little about these topics. There is little analysis however, except by some interviewed academics, which means those with decent media knowledge will not find too much new in the book..

I re-read Frank Foer’s bestseller “How Soccer Explains the World” (2004) earlier and wrote a short thread about that book, which you can find in the link below.
I re-read Frank Foer’s bestseller “How Soccer Explains the World” (2004), after some colleagues had recommended it, but mostly to see why I hated it so much the first time around.

Some quick reflections. 🧵

Tobias Jones's book on Italian ultras is deservedly an instant classic. At times overly anecdotal to me, incl. about specific soccer games, it is full of insightful observations about ultras and ultra life. Unfortunately, there is no analytical summary chapter, which would have been great.

Trying to do some lighter reading, I am mainly reading non-academic books on soccer and politics at the moment. I will share some of my readings in this thread. 🧵

Important caveat 🚨: I am atypical reader of these books. I already know quite a lot about the topics and prefer analysis over anecdotes.

No lie there!

A remarkably thoughtful reflection on the thorny issue of the politics of universities, published in the usual far-right sewers of WSJ Opinion no less. Take note, NYT Opinion!
Why Universities Can’t Be Neutral
After the Oct. 7 attacks, campus groups pressured trustees to adopt policies enforcing ‘institutional neutrality’. But it is an elusive and illusory goal.

Het zal jullie wsl niet verbazen dat ik sindsdien wat in mindere vorm ben en voorlopig geen interviews meer doe.

Calling this a distraction is only to deny what this country has become. That it has seemingly happened so quickly maybe explains (in part) why so many remain oblivious to it.
TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO

T: So force is on the table?

M: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over future of Greenland

No-brainer for any football fan in Austria, IMHO.

Unfortunately, the book on WSC they have in their shop is sold out. If you know of any copy, new or used, please let me know. 🙏

This has baffled me for months now...not even so much the lack of resistance within the U.S. military, but the lack of critical debate about this absence of resistance within U.S. media and politics. #complacency
Perhaps now people will stop wishcasting about the US military refusing illegal orders. That's not a thing that happens. The 100% compliance rate with using civilian boats for target practice was a bit of a tell.

It’s not about drugs. If it was, Trump wouldn’t have pardoned one of the largest narco traffickers in the world last month.

It’s about oil and regime change.

And they need a trial now to pretend that it isn’t. Especially to distract from his sinking under Epstein and skyrocketing healthcare costs.
