My way of dealing with it is as follows:

I embrace it by listening to melancholic Dutch music (eg Bløf) and watch corny Christmas movies (my guilty pleasure), but I also keep telling myself that this is seasonal and doesn’t accurately reflect my state of anxiety or despair.

My hunch was: internal immigration has gone up in the last decades, meaning that progressive youth leave rural parts in higher numbers than previous generations.

Not sure whether this is true, but if so, it could explain part of the effect.

The location ID on twitter revealing that 99% of the horrible shit on that website is just posted by people in India honestly soothed me a lot. Its literally all just fake.

2. Internal immigration (more progressive youth leave for cities)

I know people here focus on the mere 4% who use Bluesky, but note that only 1 in 5 use Twitter/X, of which 80%+ use it sparsely…

and yet, journalists and politicians treat is as “public opinion” 🤷‍♂️

TikTok: 37% of U.S. adults report using the platform, which is slightly up from last year and up from 21% in 2021. Instagram: Half of U.S. adults now report using it, which is on par with last year but up from 40% in 2021. WhatsApp and Reddit: About a third say they use WhatsApp, up from 23% in 2021. And 26% today report using Reddit, compared with 18% four years ago. While YouTube and Facebook continue to sit at the top, the shares of Americans who report using them have remained relatively stable in recent years.
