If we want to take defence spending from circa 2.5% of GDP to circa 3.5-4% of GDP the question isnβt βhow do we pay for it?β. Thatβs the easy bit - a combination of taxes and borrowing.
The real question is about real resources and what do we want to do less of?
(1) find enough qualified people to join the massively expanded armies.
(2) ensure enduring popular support for increased defence spending

Also, any European politicians who still thinks the current U.S. is an "ally" is delusional and incompetent. The Trump administration is an adversary at best, an enemy at worst.
