My main hesitation about a move (escape) to Canada has always been the weather. Now, a possible U.S. invasion is another. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I agree that it is "unlikely" but that doesn't mean (anymore) that it is irrational to consider the option. ๐Ÿคฏ

For today's class in "Soccer and Politics", the students read my book chapter "Soccer as Civil Society" and we'll be discussing how "modern football" is threatening the democratic space in soccer. I'll warm them up with this short video.

If ANYONE in any other job would send such text messages, EVERYONE would agree that this person is incompetent and insane. But when it is the president of the United States, the establishment sanewashes him... day in, day out.

The problem of living in chaos is that it makes you crave for stability but makes you behave more erratic.

As a European in the U.S., you don't even get those first hours...

I think both money & organization are lesser challenges than popular support. Europe needs a fundamental rebranding and rethinking of defense and military to:

(1) find enough qualified people to join the massively expanded armies.

(2) ensure enduring popular support for increased defence spending
Addressing Europe's security dependence on the US really isn't about money. It is about a massive reorganization of European militaries so they can act and fight as Europe. Right now they all just dock into the US motherboard. Spending more is needed now but doubt 3.5% is necessary w/ major reform
A thousand times this.
If we want to take defence spending from circa 2.5% of GDP to circa 3.5-4% of GDP the question isnโ€™t โ€œhow do we pay for it?โ€. Thatโ€™s the easy bit - a combination of taxes and borrowing.
The real question is about real resources and what do we want to do less of?

There's a lot of talk about rearmament and breaking US dependence. I understand the logic completely. But I wonder if people have fully absorbed the economic/consumption implications of serious rearmament, especially when we also consider the state of public opinion and the information environment.

Nope. Not even when they were more centrist.

NYT will sanewash the Trump administration into authoritarianism. Obviously, this is not a "standoff", it is a shakedown.

Also, any European politicians who still thinks the current U.S. is an "ally" is delusional and incompetent. The Trump administration is an adversary at best, an enemy at worst.
