On Substack…. 🙄

Good background piece on the rise of Peter Magyar, the man who lives rent-free in Viktor Orbán’s head.

Great piece. In what way does it play a role that he combines both the anti-Orbán role for the broader opposition and the “Orbán-without-corruption” role for disappointed Fidesz-voters?

Saw them in an away match two years ago… still brought significant away support. 💔

Boavista FC is dead. 💔

After 125 years, the historic Porto club is yet another victim of “modern football” and multiclub ownership.

Panteras Negras FC is a new club created by one of their ultra groups. An example of the “punk football” that exists in the margins of “modern football.”

Sorry, I meant the English “hard right” 🤡

Given how the BBC has self-censored under pressure from the English far right, this is sadly not surprising at all.

At the same time, open racists continue to be invited as “experts” and given free reign.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

It’s nice to also see some good news sometimes. Important ruling

European Court of Justice rules that same-sex marriages should be recognized across the EU. 🇪🇺

That seems an unlikely big drop… anything specific about the poll(ster)?

Clear! Thanks for clarifying! 👍
Rep. Salazar on Venezuela: "We're about to go in ... we need to go in ... Venezuela for the American oil companies will be a field day"

Fantastisch! En zo verdiend! Hulde!

Phenomenal picture though… they do propaganda really well.

Maybe Larry Summers can help promote the book?

I just taught my last class of the semester. Tomorrow I will reflect on what I have learned from teaching a grad course on Qualitative Methods for the first time since 2016. But first….

For my 4-6 Summer trips, I literally spend 20-30 hours collecting receipts, uploading them, and going back and forth with admin over the reimbursement request.

Now I have to chase a hotel because my Expedia Bill is not fully itemized. The 2 nights are separately, but the taxes not (ca 15% of the total amount. I will now spend an hour or so trying to get the itemized receipt, which changes NOTHING to the billed costs.

Moreover, not only does my university provide limited travel funding, it makes it almost impossible to use AirBnB and Expedia, for minuscule accounting details, while pressuring us to use expensive rental companies abroad (like Hertz). Hence, we can do less with our money.

Because you only do it a few times a year, every person every time has high start-up costs, unlike the administrative assistant, for whom it was just routine. Hence, far more hours are being wasted on declaring research trips overall and these hours are much more expensive to the university too..

University administration is mind-numbing and a constant reminder of how little they trust you or value your time and work. When I arrived at my university, you would just give your receipts to an administrative assistant and they would make the report for you. Now, you have to do it yourself.

This is an excellent point, which is often overlooked, i.e. the relationship between the (neoliberal) gutting of public spaces and the social media retreat (and loneliness) of youths.
The Tories cut 70% of youth services funding in less than a decade.

Now, many young people have retreated online, which is impacting their mental health and puts them at risk of radicalisation.

A wealth tax can help fund mass investment in the youth services we desperately need.

Isn't the whole essence of the concept of "partisan" that you are biased? 🤔

💯

This is in part because many of us live such different lives ourselves, far removed from these places and structures.
