While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI:

At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.
AI impoverishes us at every step of the process: - data centers pollute our environment - energy use drives up costs - content theft robs creators of income - the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages - using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence - the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

If "AI" was as valuable as they say it is, they wouldn't be selling it to you. They'd be using it themselves in secret to make the next Minecraft, the next Avatar, the next Hello Kitty and then they'd sell that to you.

They're trying to sell you a sick goose, while pretending it lays golden eggs.

An old comic about the end of summer
Every summer my family and I return to the motherland - the west of Ireland. In 2022, thanks to the drought, its usual deep green was singed slightly brown Me and my aunties sprang - collected - my Great Auntie Nellie from her convent in Dublin, and drove west We stopped briefly in Tipperary Town to stand outside the house my mother and her sisters grew up in in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Suddenly they're bursting with memories: "This was my favourite step! My throne!" "I saw Thin Lizzy play in that church hall in 1969!" "That's Basil's house, where Basil lived. He made the town gravestones" Further west again, we visit a living part of that old Ireland. The farm where the last stalwarts of my grandmother's generation live. [Great Uncle Ned, 84, Great Auntie Nellie, 90, Great Auntie Bernie, 89, sit chatting, hunched in chairs]
