Folks, it’s not complicated. Antifa = Antifaschistische Aktion, as it was originally in 1930s Germany. AFA, 161, Antifa, these all mean the same thing. Not simply anti-fascism.

Antifa then and now aren’t 1:1 identical, but this is the root of the word and idea. Militant direct action.

I always feel immense solidarity with others being assaulted by riot cops, but I'm also always struck by the contrast between the paramiliary PPB and riot cops in most other cities. They look borderline naked by comparison.

The alternate reframing by centrists of antifascism as a sort of safe, non-active position while simultaneously pointing fingers at “bad protesters” for optics reasons while coopting the ephemera of the movement has been abysmal to watch unfold for sure.

People throw around the word “fascism” a lot without really meaning it, or taking in the gravity of what that actually entails. We’ve collectively neutered it to use as a cheap cudgel when arguing about electoral politics, but its true face is what leads to the subjugation and murder of millions.

This is fairytale stuff. Not one fascist government in history has been stopped with words and jokes. No violent bullies, homophobes, or transphobes I’ve ever met did either, speaking from first-hand experience. Didn’t stop the shooter at Normandale or any Proud Boy.

Straight up. I wasn’t in a DV sitch, but a lot of bullies, then later, adults coming at me sometimes violently for looking like a f*g. Just ignore them and they’ll leave you alone, they’re just doing it to get a reaction, was and still is horrible and ignorant advice.

Maus originally set me down the path, followed by learning about the Armenian Genocide, Greek diaspora, Japan’s atrocities, teachers who were Holocaust survivors, a Jewish friend who wrote a blog about living with Palestinians, and learning the history of Southeast Asia. Completely changed my life.

As an anarchist and antifascist in PDX, this is exactly why I get enraged by the peaceful protest, don’t give them an excuse crowd. It’s ignorant and naive. Fascism doesn’t need excuses, it needs an opportunity to take root, then spread. Signs, optics, dancing, courts, and Congress won’t protect us.

It's fascinating how much people venerate past protests as peaceful protests, and the right way to do it, even though almost none fit modern conceptions of what that is.

We're at a point where people think civil rights protests were peaceful based on some people holding flowers and sit-ins.
