The Last Of Us x 1984 x Firefly

An alcoholic ex-soldier, haunted by his role in empowering a deadly regime, gets a shot at redemption by protecting a mute girl from turning into the galaxy's greatest weapon—one of the gods who killed his son.

#BluePit #Q #A #SF
Mood board for 'The Last Sky', a sci-fi novel. Grid of nine images. Top row: 1) close-up on a man's hand holding a little girl's hand; 2) shock troopers moving through smoke with rifles drawn; 3) a girl's face in profile with glowing scientific and mathematical symbols superimposed over her head. Middle row: 4) An epic shot of a spaceship flying past a solar eclipse through clouds; 5) The book's title 'The Last Sky'; 6) A planet burning and crumbling apart. Bottom row: 7) A man's silhouette hunched over, holding a bottle of alcohol; 8) A silhouette image of a man playfully holding a little boy on his shoulders at sunset; 9) a close up of a man's face in profile, tears rolling over his cheeks as he appears to stare at the image of the boy in the sunset.

You also disappear when you're out with your kids. I rage inwardly whenever strangers call me "Mum", as if my entire identity now revolves around the fact I have children.

Me too. She's super fun to write 😊

My little corner of London is autumning hard. Love it.
A wide avenue with parked cars either side of the road. Trees stretch out into the distance in shade of brown and red under an overcast sky.

😂 that’s the one. With plenty of nonsensical random British insults thrown in (ooh, that reminds me I need to fit in plonker somehow)

Yup. She's an interesting one, actually. I thought a lot about her when I did the summer of story slides about agency. Ess is trapped in a worsening situation, but I feel like she never loses her agency because she's just so feisty. She never loses her scathing fury, even in her bleakest moments 😬

Favourite line from yesterday's editing. Ess decided I hadn't written her feisty enough, so she escalated things.
Ess glared at Caladon. The impatient oaf still stood by the door, his expression guarded, either unable or unwilling to meet her gaze. If she had to stick her hand in scalding water again, she would be doing so with his face firmly locked in her grip.

Ha! No, they do just blurt random words sometimes. We had a party for my 8-year-old's birthday the other day, and there was a boy there speaking in memes. He was just running around the whole time yelling 'sigma boy, skibidi,' whatnot.

Been waiting a long time to share this. My husband's band, Mit Hiss, just released their first album. It's a collaboration with a close friend, and it's been a long time in the making. In the last track, I sneak in with my flute.

It's perfect music for writing to, and generally just awesome stuff.

This thread is making me want to sit and watch early 90s movies with my kiddos. Wonder what gen alpha will make of some of these.

Oh my god, that gif 😍

Currently, he's not letting me get close enough for scritches. Startled little thing must be convinced I'm going to stomp on him again 🙄

Swung my leg out of bed this morning and stepped right on my cat, who'd fallen asleep on my sheepskin rug. He's been glaring at me ever since. Even treats aren't working.

Then I have even more of a good feeling about this book. If you're loving writing it, then we'll definitely love reading it.

Ha! Good choice! I still remember getting Beethoven Second from the video rental place in town (I can't even remember what we used to call it - being Brit expats in Holland, Video Store or Blockbuster are out).

For me, the video we had kicking around I watched the most was:
Photo (not mine) of a Free Willy VHS box, with the iconic image of the whale jumping over the boy on the breaker wall with the sunset behind them.

I love the simple 'he stared at her' at the end 😂

This is so delightful. I remember part of this snip from before. Great to read the whole thing. I've been enjoying every snip I see of this. You're onto a real winner here! All three of them are so delightful. I especially love Lennie.

I absolutely do this with starting projects or diets etc. has to be a Monday. If it’s not a Monday, I don’t bother 😬 and most Mondays I start nothing

Request for writers who consider me a friend, especially those of you who do WIPSnips or other engagement posts talking about your wip:

If you have the time and energy, post here about your wip. Give me CONTEXT. Tell me who your characters are and their relationships. Tell me about your setting.
