Given the new influx of folks here, I thought it might make sense to drop an introduction!

I'm a husband and father of two amazing kids currently living with my family in Paris, France. I'm a lawyer by training who spent seven years as a local elected official in Durham, North Carolina. 1/2

It’s just work, hard work, for the rest of our lives and our kids’ and grandkids’ lives, and so on and so on. Winning every election isn’t possible but neither is designing (let alone implementing) a set of rules where everything stays fine even if we lose.

“Win every election” is not a viable strategy for preventing authoritarianism

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

No institutional design can overcome a lawbreaking president, a Congress defending lawbreaking and forfeiting its own power, a Supreme Court that pretends legal text doesn’t count to facilitate lawbreaking, and a citizenry that votes for all that.
Need at least one that wants rule of law. Maybe two.

Theoretically, with the centre left / left in agreement, there's a majority to do some things

More so than Centrists + Les Republicains

Yes of course! But would that stop the budget from becoming law?

Theoretically couldn't a leftwing PM pass a leftist budget using Article 49.3?

It was an adjustment to learn baked goods don’t last that long. But baked goods without shelf life taste better.

Croissant ingredients: France vs USA

France: flour, water, eggs, yeast, salt, granulated sugar, honey, butter

USA: picture from Costco

Food should not require a chemical engineering degree or a laboratory to make

Major cities should do a Paris.

Less cars, more peds, more bikes, more green.

There is no truth to the rumor that I will soon be named the next Prime Minister of France.

It takes 67 Senators to impeach a SCOTUS justice but only 51 with sufficient will to add 6 more justices

This is the best review of Waiting for Godot I’ve ever read. Maybe the best ever written.

So good!!

TFW you paid $1400 to see Beckett’s most famous work without knowing anything about it
One Star Review of Waiting for Godot on Broadway
I recently attended Waiting for Godot on Broadway and spent over $1,400 for two Row C seats (103 and 104). I'm a longtime admirer of Broadway productions and even hold a season pass for Shea's Performing Arts Theatre, so I came in with genuine enthusiasm and high expectations. Unfortunately, this show was unlike anything ! have ever experienced —and not in a good way.
What I encountered was not the artistry, music, or emotional storytelling I usually associate with Broadway, but instead what felt like an endless cycle of nonsensical conversation between characters who seemed trapped in their own madness. I tried-truly tried-to find meaning, symbolism, or even a thread of emotional resonance. I stayed through the first half hoping the second would offer clarity. But by intermission, it was clear: this was a waste of both time and money.
Keanu Reeves is an actor I respect greatly, but I cannot fathom why he would agree to participate in such a disjointed, inaccessible production. His talent was lost in a performance that defied reason rather than provoked insight.
To anyone considering attending: unless you are drawn to highly abstract, nearly incomprehensible theater, I strongly caution you against this show. For the average, educated, thoughtful theatergoer, it is far more frustrating than fulfilling. In my opinion, this was the single most disappointing Broadway experience I've ever had - an unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time.

Annual COVID Vaccines Protect People against Severe Disease, Even with Prior Immunity

"The new research also “calls into question the idea that younger individuals and those without risk factors don’t need the vaccine,” Viswanathan says."
Annual COVID Vaccines Save Lives, New Study Shows
A new study shows that receiving an updated COVID vaccine reduced people’s risk of severe disease and death in all age groups, regardless of immunity from prior infection or vaccination
