And I specifically said "US government" because it wasn't just Trump. The theft of TikTok was Trump's idea, but it actually happened under Biden - Democrats sponsored the bill and got it through Congress, and Biden signed it into law.

That's exactly why M*rc A********n and L****y E*****n were so eager to have the US government essentially gift TikTok to them. They know the standard VC approach of creating a competitor is too expensive to be feasible, so they'd much rather just steal it. Which is what they did.

TikTok as it exists today happened due to a weird confluence and sequence of events, and it'd be extremely difficult to build a competitor from scratch today without a ridiculous amount of external funding, which could only come from the same conservative VCs that are already in bed with Trump.

The gutting of TikTok is even more disheartening than the gutting of other platforms that we've seen over the last few years (Reddit, Twitter, etc.), because with TikTok, everyone on the platform knows it's happening, but there's simply no alternative to move to, and there may never be.

For those who missed it in 2015: Lenovo intentionally installed malware *in the BIOS* which would inject a rootkit into your OS and MITM all your traffic.

Even if you reinstalled the OS from scratch, the malware was in the BIOS, so it would just reinfect the freshly-installed OS too.

That particular piece of BIOS malware only installed it on Windows, but you could easily whip up a version that would install a backdoor on Linux too, and that would probably live undetected for far longer.

Completely nuked all trust in that company and brand, irrevocably.

It's actually WAY worse than the Wikipedia description makes it sound. Because it was implemented in the BIOS, even if you reinstall the OS from a fresh image, it would reinsert the malware into the freshly-installed OS. It's as bad of a backdoor as you can get, and unexpungable.

We support open source software (and hardware), and partner with developers and maintainers across the ecosystem. We deliberately create a big tent, because we want open source software to win. We don’t partner based on individuals’ or organizations’ beliefs, values, or political stances outside of their alignment with us on increasing the adoption of open source software. We’ve sent out large quantities of hardware to folks at Fedora, Bluefin, Bazzite, NixOS, Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Omarchy, and many other distros, and have sponsored either the organizations directly or events with Linux Foundation, LVFS, NixOS, Debian, KDE, Hyprland, and others. Within the team itself, personal distro and OS preferences span basically every Linux distro you can imagine along with FreeBSD. I personally am running machines with Fedora (for machine learning), Bazzite (for gaming), Omarchy (general productivity), and Windows 11 (when I have to).

I definitely understand that not everyone will agree with taking a big tent approach, but we want to be transparent that bringing in and enabling every organization and community that we can across the Linux ecosystem is a deliberate choice.
