JUST DROPPED: The latest Climate Change Committee progress report is out, and the top 5 recommendations are all about cutting energy demand.

Interesting-looking new study finding that "mode shift alone represents only 1/5th of the potential GHG benefits of increasing active transportation in a way that also reduces trip lengths through destination changes" doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...

Today is #WorldBicycleDay 🚲

Did you know❓ Cycle lanes count for just 0.2% of the current road infrastructure.

It’s time to demand safer streets that put the health & safety of pedestrians and cyclists first 👉bit.ly/4jPzXsa
Text reads: “The world would be better with more cycling lanes that PROTECT CYCLISTS. Yet very few roads have them!” Illustration shows a cyclist riding in a dedicated yellow bike lane separated from a car.

Good thread on the role of low energy demand scenarios in decarbonisation 👇

Not news or surprising, but a worthy reminder: "The most powerful actions a person can take to cut their carbon pollution include getting rid of a petrol [or diesel] car, eating less meat and avoiding flights."

Car use and meat consumption drive emissions gender gap, research suggests
The French study of 15,000 people shows men emit 26% more pollution due to eating red meat and driving more

Transport must decarbonise fast and fairly.

This new UKERC report pulls together two decades of critical evidence to support better policy, planning and investment. Essential reading for anyone shaping the future of mobility.

Our study on UK's wealthiest & climate action has been published, and has been covered by @theguardian.com. Rich Britons have the potential to lead on climate action, but need to cut their own excessive emissions. #ClimateAction #Inequality www.theguardian.com/environment/...

🚀 It’s finally here!
We analyzed over a year of operations from 1.6 million EVs in China:
🔹 Usage patterns across different EV fleet types
🔹 Charging behaviors by power type & fleet category
🔹 Spatio-temporal dynamics of EV charging demand

Good illustration of the alternative options available to the government when considering how to approach decarbonisation of surface transport.

Shows car-kms travelled per capita in latest CCC advice against ‘positive low energy futures’ (ie scenarios that are demand-led)

Nice summary, thanks.

I usually like and respect what the @thecccuk.bsky.social are doing but we can't keep relying on the technology fix in transport. There is ample evidence that across mobility and transport we need some serious (20-50%) demand reduction

We found that those of us who did not walk or cycle for transport could expect an average of five and half months shorter life expectancy, and a less healthy life. 👀

Countries that weaken or stop their #netzero and #climate actions may be consigning their populations to decades of preventable #airpollution illness.
