Forests are reorganizing in their composition and structure in response to climate change - will they be able to maintain their carbon?
Turns out: yes - they even sequestered more carbon than resilient forests!

New paper out in Global Biogeochemical Cycles πŸ”„πŸ’Ž @agu.org dx.doi.org/10.1029/2025...
Central Europe has seen unprecedented forest disturbances recently, but how are forests recovering? We surveyed disturbance hotspots in 10 countries 3-5 years after disturbance, finding ample tree regeneration and no signs of forest loss (median 4750 stems/ha), but... 1/2 doi.org/10.1111/gcb....
We're hiring! In the Future Forests excellence cluster, we're looking for a postdoc in participatory modelling. If you like modelling but are also interested in transdisciplinary research and co-creation with stakeholders, this position is for you! πŸŒ²πŸ€πŸ§‘β€πŸ’» uni-freiburg.de/en/job/00004...
Yesterday, our PhDs visited the Ε umava National Park, the Czech neighbor to our Bayerischer Wald NP πŸ‡¨πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ
Together they cover an impressive area of >900 km² fittingly dubbed "borderless wilderness" - a great reminder of the privilege of getting to do "borderless science" in a "borderless team"! 🏞️
I’m really concerned about early career scientists using generative AI in writing, because writing is how we think and reflect. There’s almost nothing *more* human than that, and to give that gift away to a machine is almost unconscionable to me
Do you like forests and computer models? πŸŒ³πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»
Within the Future Forests excellence cluster, we are hiring two modellers for 7 year (!) positions here in Freiburg.

BIIIIIIIG thank you to my amazing team of coauthors @wernerrammer.bsky.social, @akkym.bsky.social, @monicagturner.bsky.social, and @rupertseidl.bsky.social πŸ’š

My favourite kind of simulation study - driven by pressing challenges in ecosystem management and executed in cooperation with the people facing them on the ground right now.
Great work by @ttkeller.bsky.social and Co.! πŸ”₯
New paper in Ecological Applications! Management that mimics historical mosaics of fire severity could promote postfire tree regeneration under future climate change. Thanks to co-authors @monicagturner.bsky.social @rupertseidl.bsky.social @christinadollinger.bsky.social @knowlton.bsky.social
Can fire exclusion zones enhance postfire tree regeneration? A simulation study in subalpine conifer forests

That's so cool, Sebastian! Really great work from you and your community! 🌞

Great talk on a deep learning application for ecology by Johannes Dollinger (@johdolgha.bsky.social) from the Uni ZΓΌrich!

Main takeway: deep learning products should not primarily be used to replace ecological research but can rather help guide it (e.g., by identifying priority areas) πŸ’»πŸŽ―πŸ₯Ύ

Really interesting study, thank you! I was not familiar with discount rates before so it was very interesting to learn about them here in the context of forest restoration. And I'm glad that the results suggest that individuals extend compassion to future generations!

Yess, iLand world domination πŸ’ͺ🏻

Super cool to have you visiting!

My dear colleague @kirstenkrueger.bsky.social just gave an amazing talk at the Chaos Computer Club!
She talked about what forests can do for us and we for them in the face of climate change. While at it, she also created my new favourite ecology meme!

Thank you, and yeah, I can't wait either, the "Vorfreude" (pre-joy?!) is immense! I also really enjoyed your video about your research in GYE and specifically Timon's study - so cool and compelling! πŸŒ³β›°οΈπŸ”₯
