#31DaysOfGraves Day 10: urn

I took this photo one foggy morning in the Calton Hill cemetery, Edinburgh. For those that care, Pentax K-3iii, SMC Pentax-F 50mm f/1.7 lens.

#scotland #taphophilia #cemetery #graveyard #monument
Black and white photograph of a tall burial monument. A tall urn with two handles stands on a tall plinth with a square cross-section. In the background is a leafless winter tree and multiple other monuments including some obelisks. It is a little bit foggy.

I found many monument catalogues on archive.org. I used search terms like:
- monuments -- catalogs
- tombstones -- catalogs
- sepluchral monuments

I recognised many designs in these:

- archive.org/details/CoxS...
- archive.org/details/exce...

Sadly but no design for our #31DaysOfGraves flowers.

#31DaysOfGraves - flower

Let's see how many of these I can do without taking new photos.

These flowers are on the stone belonging to Captain Alfred Smith in Cupids, NL
A white marble gravestone in Cupids, Newfoundland and Labrador. There are carved flowers on the top portion of the monument. On the bottom the inscription reads:

In memory of
Capt Alfred Smith
Who died
July 22nd, 1888
Aged 80 years

There is an epitaph below this but it is difficult to make out clearly.

Day 10 of #31DaysOfGraves - Urn

Lichen has really claimed this urn in Kilnaughton, Islay, with its mournful epitaph below:

And you'll sometimes come and see me
Where I am lowly laid
I shall not forget you father
I shall hear when you pass
With your feet above my head
In the long and pleasant grass

The story deepens! We now know the person who brought a #Roman tombstone to New Orleans was a US soldier stationed in Italy during WW2; I like to think that Sextus Congenius Verus - the tombstone 'owner', & a military man himself - would have understood...

This decorous 1740 monument in St Mary's Turville is a fine sight in this Chilterns church - no effigies and two handsome urns; dignified and not overbearing.

A black and white photograph showing a weathered, marble gravestone in a cemetery, with a vineyard in the blurred background.

The central headstone is tall, topped with a cross, and features an ornate inscription: "In Memory of Our Dear Parents Johann Carl Heinrich Fiebig Born Dec. 20th 1848 Died Nov. 4th 1922, and his wife Friedericke Wilhelmine Fiebig Born Feb. 22nd 1851 Died June 2nd 1922."

The grave is enclosed by a low metal fence, and a second, larger, rough-hewn stone cross is visible to the right. The image has a vignette and the watermark "GARDENS OF THE SILENT" in the bottom right corner.

Day 10, Urn: Today I've picked this gorgeous example of an urn on the grave of Caleb Smith at the Old House Cove Burial Ground, in Twillingate. This gravestone dates to 1819, a fairly early stone for NL! There are at least 2 other stones in Twillingate of this same design.
#31DaysofGraves
A limestone gravestone with 3 ridges on the top. The central image is a large urn, in the Greek style, with a cloth draped over it, suspended on either side by a carved stone ring. The inscription is partly weathered away, but you can read 'In Memory Of Caleb Smith...February 1819...Aged 7[?] Years'
