See also the eugenics of people like Trump -- there's a very clear analogue in white rich people marriage patterns. Said manager drove me crazy, but I did kind of understand her after a lifetime of being the poor kid in rich people's houses.

I love Joyce, but he does require a lot of outside knowledge (Ireland, Catholicism, Empire). I never even tried the Wake because life is short. Faulkner, people love! I find him stultifying but he has a gothic quality that can be fun and he does shit with sentences that no one else does.

We once had an interesting convo at dinner, when she admitted to having an arranged marriage. "Oh," I said. "My people do that too, we just call it the debutante circuit." (I grew up broke but w/social capital in that class). It's the same all around, keep the $$ and power in the same 12 families.

Does anyone make oven mitts that look like those baseball slider gloves?
Because someone I know who isn't online might find a pair amusing in his Christmas stocking.

If you're the person* who reached out to ask if it's worth it to keep going —

my view is this: if you can get out to a country with a healthcare system that will work for you? do it.

otherwise? make them kill you.

Let's just say that as a former Cisco employee who had a Brahmin manager, I was not in the least surprised by the caste discrimination case.

It took a full body press, and luckily, even my half-feral Betty Boop would open up. Reluctantly.
Bon courage!
(Also, gardening gloves can be your friend).

Hmm. Her late stuff is often problematic (as are her class politics), but White Album was groundbreaking.
Especially for those of us in the generation behind her ...

Not shocking at all for a system that is still, despite it's protestations, built on hierarchies of degree, class, etc.
Why do you think academics get so hysterical about email salutations?

He's so much more interesting than his self-generated mythos though, because he was trying so hard to cover for his sexual amorphism. See also: Gloria Hemingway (born Gregory).
Also, as a stylist, he's fundamental to a number of later writers (see Didion).

Oh thanks! That actually makes sense to me!
As is clear, I really dislike Faulkner (which doesn't mean I don't acknowledge his place in the canon), so this is helpful.

Can't argue, and clearly he's the most interesting character in the book ...

My semi-feral late black cat, I'd sit cross legged on the floor with her slightly trapped in my legs. Pry open her jaws, stuff it down and hold her mouth closed until she swallowed.
It got easier the firmer and swifter I got.

Not to sound professorial, but can you expand on that? 😂

So Faulknerheads? What is it you love? Sell me?

People love gojuchang, and maybe I just don't have access to good gojuchang here, but it's too sweet for me.

Why do I suspect that Papi and Vladdy's godfather, Pedro, taught him this as a toddler. Tiny Vladdy "What do we say?" "Yankees LOOOOSE!"

Vladdy: "DAAAAAA YANKEES LOSE!"

OH MY GOD MAKE ROASTED POTATOES

sorry, I got excited there for a minute

Aha! Thanks ... I did not know that about the Lutherans.
I find it perplexing in myself that, lapsed as I am, I apparently firmly believe in transubstantiation.
cmf406.bsky.social
Not at all! Hospital chaplains and even Deacons can administer the Host -- it just has to be sanctified by a Priest.
cmf406.bsky.social
But none of them consider it the Real Presence. It's a metaphor. A powerful metaphor, but they don't believe in transubstantiation.

(I'm very lapsed, but not so lapsed that I can cross the street to the Protestants because of this.) 🤷‍♀️

Flannery O'Connor: "If it's a metaphor, than to hell with it."
It is NOT a metaphor. It is the Real Presence.
This is the core belief of Catholicism.

This is a little performative for most Protestants and it is Extremely Not for most Catholics.

Some clergy are begging to be allowed closer to the detention center to perform communion.

"You are preventing our religious freedom," someone in the crowd shouts.
