We were so bummed that our beloved uncle who grew up Back of the Yards and was a St Rita's grad died just before. Like a lot of us he'd left the Church but he would have been SO thrilled.

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.

I live in a small town, and between the Salvation Army and Knights of Columbus, there are whole weeks when I have to bite my fucking tongue just to buy groceries. (Yelling at those old men isn't going ot accomplish anything).

When I was Suddenly Bereaved, my LA friends took me to the Korean spa and I did not realize that what I needed in that moment was to be scrubbed like a grubby pot by ladies with green scrungies. I came out blinky and clean.

One of my first jobs out of college in the 80s was finishing a book for middle schoolers on the Transcontinental RR. That I got the word "genocide" in there is one of my proudest moments.

Pope Francis's Laudito Si, is one of the great texts of environmental thinking, and if you're not a believer, it's easy to swap "G-d" for "Gaia" or whatever prime signifier you prefer.
I'm culturally Catholic, formed by Sacred Heart nuns and SJW Jesuits, but my practice is primarily Zen.
