NextDoor is a trip. I legit see a post like "my landlord moved me into an illegal apartment and is now stealing my mail so I can't move but I don't want to file a police report because that would be so dramatic, anyone been thru this?"

Gurl wut. Walk me through your mindset. You listed 3 crimes.

"Digital slavery" has entered the piracy chat.

I really need everybody to understand that nothing is slavery but slavery. That is not a comparison you make.

Not that you asked, but here's a thread of intriguing (real!) food facts to amuse/bore your friends and family.

Great for gatherings when you need to change the subject!

One of the more interesting twitter fights I ever got into was when anti abortion laws were starting to ramp up, some folks who i don't know how well meaning they were, started posting herbal abortifacient recipes.

To which my response was a not at all measured NO DO NOT EVER DO THAT 30 tweet rant.

AI scraping.

I'm comfortable giving my art away.

I'm not comfortable having my free art stolen by billionaires to shove into the environment destroying mechanical turk.
what do you mean your choice was taken away?
I'm saying this as someone who usually puts up my art for pay what you want download.

That was my CHOICE.

You notice I stopped in 2023?

Cuz my choice was taken away.

Don’t steal from people who are also under the boot. It is that simple. Otherwise you are revealing you don’t give a shit about poverty or unemployment

But i guess bc authors don’t have the ability to fix capitalism fuck them right

We’re not licking boot we are trying to survive.
Buncha hand wringing "omg theft is wrong" types here in the middle of the most poverty and unemployment we've seen in decades.

Fix need and distress, theft goes away.

Until then, you're just choosing your favorites to survive capitalism.

But hey, least the boot tastes good, right?

There's been a real attitude shift in the second half of this year, and the overarching belief suddenly is that piracy is good especially if it's the little guy getting fucked over.

Good luck finding books to read after we've all died I guess.

More generally, wherever you are in the world: if you have kids’ toys, books, clothes or anything else in just-about-giftable condition that you were thinking of decluttering some time soon, please do it now, this week ideally, and get them to your local charity shop.
Hey Ottawa folks: I gave some kids' books to Twice Upon a Time and they said they've receved fewer donations than usual for this time of year. So if you have any kids' books in good condition, or time or money to spare, here's the info:

This fight over “should authors get paid for their work” debate boils down to this: many, MANY people do not see art as labor.
If art isn’t labor, then you don’t have to change your political views to justify piracy. Easy peasy!

Racial justice is also about recognizing when we dismiss people

marginalized creators would be hit hardest … without any nuance isn’t neutral

This is why I found the discussions from Doctorow and the justifications by @eff.org so damn gross

And it’s a constant pattern in these discussions
It sucks that intellectual property laws are really harmful in some ways, but protect marginalized people in other ways - so just getting rid of them in order to help some people would hurt a lot of other people.

And if you really want a book but can't afford it, readers love sharing their favorites. Put it out there. Say, DOES ANY GIFT FAIRY WANT TO BUY ME ______.

You'd be surprised.

You cannot respect artists at a fundamental level and steal their work.

Sorry, but that's why we hate AI.

Calling me, in these times, an authoritarian for suggesting that authors should have the right not to provide their work under certain circumstances, is a blocking offense.

I'm not entertaining that. Everyone has the right to the product of their own labor except artists i guess. FOH.

And they didn't have access to the internet. Again, it is a matter of SCALE.

But also, "To every cow, her calf."

The right to copy books has not always been so free and clear as you are claiming here.

As someone who has half of their way below the poverty line level income come from their books, all I have to say is FUCK YOU if you pirate books.
My books go on sale regularly, and I will happily send an ebook copy to people who ask for it. Using social justice language to substantiate it is gross.

The archive we're talking about is not a library.

No author I know is asking a library to take down their books.
November 24, 2025 at 5:00 PM
Libraries pay for books. There are 17k public libraries in the US. 90k school libraries. If even a small percent of those each buy a book, that helps out considerably financially.

In Canada, libraries pay the author PER BORROW.

A lot of books on internet archives were stolen to begin with...

I think I have less tolerance for the "piracy is okay if you're poor" thing because I am very poor, I've had a few rough years in a row atop a few rough decades (I am possibly only breathing because y'all did that big fundraiser for my birthday last year, which I'm still paying vet bills with).
November 24, 2025 at 4:23 PM
All right. Let's try this.

Piracy is also a consent issue.

There are books on that archive that have been rewritten since. There's juvenilia that people don't want out in the world.

But it's there, and they can't stop it. It's like if people kept sharing your most embarrassing picture.
