Extremely accurate thread on how book finances work for trade published authors #BookSky

tl;dr it’s not a lot of money per effort year and buying our books at indies makes a material, positive difference
I'm going to do a little thread on how the money from books works for traditionally published authors because people have questions, and this is always useful info to share IMO. First, a big disclaimer that every contract is different, and there are a million factors that can change things. 1/

Academics need to tell families and friends, especially at holidays, that there are forbidden questions:

How's that book coming?

Oh, you are still working on that book?

Does it usually take that long?

How much money will you make?

Waitlisting people can lead to inequality.

A study of 274,316 students finds that low-SES students are much less likely to wait for offers to preferred schools. This led low-SES students to ultimately enroll in programs they liked less and that were less prestigious.

I actually kind of like going to the store the day before Thanksgiving or even the morning of. I feel like it's part of the communal experience. I did most of our shopping Sunday and yesterday but I'm not sad that I'll need to get a few more things.

Have we done "pumpkin pie is abolitionist" discourse yet this year

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I got an eel facts Advent calendar for my spouse and it was one of the best gifts I've ever given her.
This is one of the last days I get to post these absolutely curséd animations I made for eel facts season. I think I'll post them in a thread here for posterity.

Indeed, some of the earliest petitions and what we’d now call letters to the editors that circulated in print media in the early americas were manifestos, and other political writings from enslaved and free Black people arguing for abolition and/or return to Africa.
On my drive back to New York from giving a book talk at Bowdoin College, I stopped briefly at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where I stumbled on this remarkable history. A sharp reminder that slavery permeated the American experience, even where least expected. www.seacoastonline.com/story/news/l...

Puberty blockers don't even benefit the majority of gender dysphoric kids in a way such they shouldn't just immediately go on HRT. Blockers are for questioning kids, not kids who are sure about their Identity.

I started HRT at age 14 fwiw. Puberty blockers never would have made sense for me.
The “Pathways” trial is, IMO on more than one level, a thoroughly unethical piece of “research” to be carrying out on children, especially children who are part of a marginalised minority.

Breaking News: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he personally instructed the CDC to abandon its position that vaccines do not cause autism. The move underscores his determination to challenge scientific orthodoxy — in this case, that vaccines save lives — and bend the health department to his will.

Trump in a room with a very charismatic person results in like half a day of Trump agreeing with everything that person said, so this has the potential to be very, very funny.
