I got a Twitter DM from the publisher of a book by Jeffrey Haas (Fred Hampton's lawyer) that I'd recommended in a thread that went viral, thanking me for the unexpected spike in sales. I'm sure we're talking dozens, not hundreds, but they were like doing highkey internet sleuthing to figure it out!
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Baby names aren’t just personal choices; they reflect culture, geography, gender, identity, and as i've been investigating, politics too. I’ve been analyzing 50 years of U.S. baby naming to see how they map onto political polarization in the U.S.
Here’s what I found 🧵

White people are a menace.
Names like Cannon, Remington, Barrett, Gauge, and Gunner have surged. While it's not shocking that nearly all of these are names given to boys, that's actually a sad state of affairs. inequalitybyinteriordesign.wordpress.com/2025/11/23/w...

My even more unpopular opinion is unless you have personally experienced the thing, you should probably refrain from having an opinion on it.

We need to return to shaming people for parroting YouTube/TikTok with stuff like "When I want your opinion, I'll just find the YouTuber who gave it to you."

One of the producers on Guilty Gear Strive said it was basically impossible to source player feedback on balance changes online because nobody had original opinions and would just parrot what the most popular content creators said and so they had to rely on data and I think about that every day.

You can see why the Coalition has gone full climate denial from these numbers. Their MPs, Senators, branch members and voters are disproportionately older (and male).

Results show a ‘general sense of gloom’ as fewer Australians now believe climate change is caused by humans compared with March

3. The Wall Street Journal reports that one Republican being pushed by some Republicans is a demand to strip transgender health care from plans receiving ACA subsidies, a move that could significantly restrict access for transgender people nationwide who rely on subsidized plans for their care.

2. Many transgender people felt a momentary relief when a short-term CR ended the shutdown without any anti-transgender provisions, pushing the next deadline to Jan. 30. But that deal—struck between a handful of moderate Democrats and Republicans—was never a final word.
Continuing Resolution And Shutdown Compromise Contains No Anti-Trans Riders
The shutdown package must still get through the House of Representatives, and further fights on appropriations are expected by the new Jan 30 deadline.

1. After the shutdown fight, Republicans promised Democrats a vote on extending enhanced ACA subsidies, which cover 20 million Americans.

Now, new reporting shows that Republican negotiators want to make a trans funding ban a requirement for the extension.

The proposal, which was first detailed in the Wall Street Journal, could harm transgender people even in blue states if it becomes part of the negotiated deal.

Way to preload the bias as a journalist. You don’t tell your interview subjects what you want to hear beforehand.

But then again, it’s not like they care about the truth when it includes the trans community.

Can I just say that there's a very obvious implication in someone believing both "Republicans want to shoot trans people" and supporting gun control that won't disarm armed Republicans but will prevent trans people from becoming gun owners?
I support Trans rights as much as anyone but it's an electoral loser. It helps Republicans who are ok with shooting trans.

A friend of mine has taken to calling stuff like this "wet nightmares". Across ideologies, people seem to *like* imagining that something that terrifies them is happening constantly. Liberals *like* thinking that every school is a warzone, racists *like* thinking immigrants are doing violent crimes.
I’m not sure I’ll bring myself to watch this new documentary Thoughts and Prayers on HBO about the active shooter preparedness industry.

But just this clip shows how twisted we’ve let our society get. What we’ve done to our kids. It’s absolutely unacceptable.

Gun reform, NOW!
