Hi! I’m Molly Hodgdon. I live in Vermont with my beautiful FIV+ cats Fergus and Francie. Banner photo by W. Eugene Smith. Profile pic is a postcard from my collection mailed 1908. Not a bot. Not selling anything. Just a keeper of forgotten cats.

So anyway, all of this is to say that watching everyone donate to the hay drive this week had been very sweet and healing for me. Whenever I was feeling awful, glancing at that total going up and knowing the compassion it represents made me feel better. I'm honestly so grateful. ❤️

One by one they ALL came outside and surrounded me, gently nuzzling and asking for hugs. Then of course some of them scampered off to create mayhem and make me laugh. They are my beloved friends as much as any cats or dogs.

I know most people draw a line between companion animals and farm animals, but the critters at Merrymac are really companion animals to me and everyone else who works and volunteers there. Like, last night I was feeling very sad about Fergus so I went over there and sat outside the goat herd pen.

@catsofyore.bsky.social While browsing through scanned archives of the magazine Chess Review, which was published from 1933 to 1969, I found a cat! People who have watched Netflix's The Queen's Gambit will recognize that Chess Review was the magazine shoplifted by Beth Harmon.
On the October 1957 cover of Chess Review, a black cat is seemingly playing chess. It is looking intently at the white king on the board. The cover is captioned, "A CT CAN NIP AT A KING." The photo is a black and white photo.

Absolutely love this twitter classic:
Exchange between two twitter users. A man called Scott Castaneda write to Tom Morella, "I use to be a fan until your political opinions come out. Music is my sanctuary and the last thing I want to hear is political bs when I'm listening to music. As far as I'm concerned you and pink are completely done. Keep running your mouth and ruining your fan base." User Howard Finklestein replies, "What 'machine' did you think he was raining against? The dishwasher?"

We are in the fall spirit here! But more than anything else we're so grateful for all the donation to our winter hay drive. We are so close to the halfway point - can you help us reach it today!? ❄️ donorbox.org/mmfs-2025-ha...
photo of a sign standing on a lawn, backlit by the evening sun. The signpost is decorated with dried corn stalks with pumpkins and flowers and halloween signs at the base. The sign says "merrymac farm sanctuary".

Thank you! P.S. Sat here for about five minutes trying to decide whether I should use an exclamation point or a period after "thank you" and the implications of both which seems like something you could appreciate.

Thank you, Andy. ❤️

Don't worry, I'm not going to be a sad slug on here much longer. My moderately unhealthy grieving habit is buying myself old kitty photos and negatives on eBay so there there are a lot of new Cats of Yore on the way for me to share with you all!

(Please feel free to trauma-dump here but only if it will make you feel better to vent and not re-open old wounds.)

or surrounded by apathetic people. Your grief was not weird or wrong or "overreacting" and I'm so sorry if anyone made you feel that way. Sending all my love to you if you're going through it now or had a bad experience in the past. 💔

I'd like to just say that in the wake of losing Fergus this week I realize how lucky I am to have a partner who is hurting just as much as I am, supportive family, and a tidal wave of compassion from friends and internet supporters. My heart truly goes out to anyone who has faced this alone... 🧵

Thank you, Genny. One of the many things we've been grateful for this week is that we've been so surrounded by so much warmth and compassion. My heart breaks for anyone who has to go through this alone or with the "it's just a cat" type people.
