One thing to know about Magistrates is that the qualifications for becoming one are: 1) be aged between 18-74, 2) be literate, and 3) be ‘of good character’ (no previous convictions or bankruptcy)

If you’re up for it, you can help beat bias in the system by entering it
Can't believe they're going to end trial by jury. It's one of our most fundamental rights. Literally Magna Carta stuff.

Good morning, Biskers. I have So Much Work To Do Today even if it's American Thanksgiving (we'll do ours on Saturday).

- copy edits
- amazon prep
- possibly the box set
- ideally print eds but probably not
- finish putting in minor revisions
- ideally at least SOME new words
- panic
- so much panic

The Great Way is a TERRIFIC epic fantasy trilogy.
Harry Connolly (@byharryconnolly.bsky.social) is one of my fave authors.

He needs $ help. harryjconnolly.com/17553-2/

For a good binge read, grab his completed epic fantasy trilogy The Great Way.

His "A Key, an Egg, an Unfortunate Remark" is the best standalone urban fantasy I've read.
A Very Bad Month
Okay. So. I need to update everyone on where things stand for me, why I have made almost no progress on the new novel in the past month, and how things are looking for the future.  What I don&#8217…

So a wondrous new technology (or more accurately, a kleptomatic bullshit generator) that does the writing for you is not remotely helpful. Nobody asked for it. What would be more helpful would be if the big publishing companies paid us more and weren't so predatory or inscrutable in their practices.

This is not—quite—that story.

Books don't sell nearly as many copies as you think they do. Every sale has significance. This is especially true of preorders and first week of publication orders. These move mountains for authors.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

As a new writer under my first contract, I submitted a proposal for a new series. The editor above mine read it & said to my editor, "Oh, this one's *dangerous*. She makes you forget you're supposed to be working & just catches you up in the story!"

this book, fwiw 🥰 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...

It's hard to believe it's been 15 years since Young Justice entered my life. And already 6 years since I moved to Los Angeles for a job doing storyboards on season 4! And there are so many more stories to tell!

The Fictional Writer is as realistic as a city's layout according to film. You only have to see ONE city you know as portrayed in film to go "LOL, that's not real!" And they do that with EVERY city, & EVERY profession.

Fictional writers are wealthy bc it's narratively convenient, not bc it's real.
Hypothesis: the Fictional Writer exists because they're a protagonist in a work of fiction, and protagonists need agency in order for there to be any room for dramatic change. The wish-fulfilment parody of a real author is a much better subject of fiction than any realistic portrayal could be.

Do you know how much of the cover price goes to a trad published writer? About 10-15%.

The various types of indie pub get a higher percentage (but have to do more work with virtually zero publicity budget).

How many publishers have been put out of business by piracy? Not a lot. Writers, tho'...

No bookshop can stock all titles. No bookseller can keep current with all publications. If Amazon discount and next day delivery aren't factors for you, ordering from your local bookshop alerts staff to new things. I ordered this and a bookseller bought their own. Sometimes they add a copy to stock.

I remember having a UBI. It was called “living with my parents,” and I had all my food/shelter needs covered, plus free access to a (shared) TV, music, books, a library card, cars I could borrow and more.

I still worked drudge jobs, because I wanted to buy lots of comics and take girls to movies.
Always grinds my gears when people say "No one would work drudge jobs if there was a UBI"

But even staying completely capitalist, I disagree. If I received a baseline living-wage UBI, and then I was offered REWARDS for drudge jobs, I'd take it! I want to save up for treats and travel and hobbies!

And if you have to do QE, you give it to ordinary people to pay off their debt rather than feeding it into the ravenous maw of the financial system; that’s better all round, in the end.
No bailouts. The US should extort these companies when the crash happens so they get minimal compensation in return for nationalizing the entire panopticon industry and then destroying it once harvested for socially useful parts. It won’t happen but it should
