It turned out that starting a link directory didn't leave time/brainspace for nearly as many book reviews. Helping people find non-AI sites in the genAI tide has been great, and LTB isn't going anywhere. Please keep sending in your bookmarks and open tabs with niche/useful sites.

Mayors turning police against morally justified legal protesters while refusing to arrest state-sanctioned killers is par for the course and I’m very genuinely not sure why anyone expected anything different to happen here.

this is why it’s so important to listen to locals when someone’s mayor goes viral for saying one correct thing that they will immediately contradict with their subsequent actions
This is exactly why I fucking hated seeing people hyping him up for saying "Get the fuck out of Minneapolis!"

It was 99% from people who don't even live here and don't have to have him as mayor. We knew better.

This is Minneapolis:

-drop the kids off for a day with their grandparents
-go to brunch with your wife
-get a text from neighbors who don’t have enough food & can’t leave home or they might be abducted by fed govt
-get groceries as helicopters roar overhead
-deliver food & this vehicle passes you

Sen Chris Murphy wants to require warrants and ban masks as a requirement for more ICE funding. WHY ARE YOU GIVING THEM FUNDING HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING.

They've arrested 29 people protesting murder.

They've arrested 0 murderers.

They care more about property damage than murder. As they always have.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says 29 people were arrested in downtown last night during a noise demonstration at a hotel reportedly housing ICE agents: "For those that are taking the bait and causing property damage or otherwise, there are consequences. We're holding the line here all the way."

State and local law enforcement know the communities they serve. They’ve built the trust and know how to keep us safe.

As Minnesotans express their first amendment rights, I encourage you to remain peaceful and know that local law enforcement has one goal in mind: your safety.

y'all Kristi Noem absolutely deserves to be impeached but please, please be wary of Dems who try to use an impeachment vote on Noem (fine, but not gonna end in removal) as a substitute for action on ICE funding (real, hits them where it hurts)

Word to the wise: even if you aren't in a city under direct attack yet, you want to be developing these sorts of relationships NOW with sympathetic folks at local institutions.

You want to have those numbers in your phone ready for when you have to send exactly these sorts of texts.
Absolutely insane that my life has become texting with local church pastors to try and find a safe place to hold an emergency meeting for parents at my kid’s’ preschool to figure out how to respond to the federal government kidnapping neighbors.

It is Imperative to understand that Frey is your enemy. He is not a misguided ally he is not delusional he is not trying to mitigate harm, when given the choice between disorder or ethnic cleansing he is choosing the ethnic cleansing and he will always choose order

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

One of the takeaways of my current book is that the ability of the federal government to exert real power in domestic settings has always been largely overblown.
They don’t have the juice or manpower for it. This is not late 1930s Germany. There is no state monopoly on media. They are wildly unpopular.
The goal here is martial law. It’s martial law. Let’s be clear about that.

This is as true for the absurdist or the writer of cozies as it is for someone penning demi-documentary grimdark stories about an imaginary apocalypse or someone whose gig is cute cat videos. The job is to help people breathe, and it matters even on the days it feels like you’re covered in lead. 2/2

This is a lesson I learned as a preteen, listening to Soviet refuseniks talk about how they survived until they were allowed to leave the country. You make art, you make joy, and you fight. Because those three things are the same thing.

Clarity is essential in these moments. Using words like "or otherwise" leaves ambiguity as to whether he is considering First Amendment activity "taking the bait."

Not only is that bad for people in Minneapolis, but it's language that the Trump administration will use against people.

Incredible that people have careers based around telling those who are struggling to keep their chin up and not react because "They're clearly [doing worse thing than the last thing] to bait an excuse to [do even worse thing]."

It's a ratchet. You're describing a ratchet. You are selling ratchets.

ken did a really great thread here that nicely articulates why i block doomers.

the only thing i’ll add is this: doomerism is a form of voter suppression. saying shit like “there won’t be elections” is saying there’s no point in fighting. it’s demotivating. fuck that.
This kind of thing does point out a real ethical dilemma: block or mute?

If there are *any* Democrats in Congress who will still vote to keep funding this administration when it is using that money to terrorize our cities and refusing to allow congressional representatives their clear right to observe their activities, then those reps need to be primaried into retirement
I was just denied access to the ICE processing center at the Whipple Building.

Members of Congress have a legal right and constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight where people are being detained.

The public deserves to know what is taking place in ICE facilities.
JUST NOW: Huge mass of agents in a standoff, weapons drawn as Reps. Ilhan Omar, Angie Craig, and Kelly Morrison attempt to conduct congressional oversight at the Whipple Building, which has been HQ for thousands of ICE agents.

In Minneapolis this afternoon—

Hundreds are streaming across the snow and ice into Powderhorn Park for a rally and march demanding ICE leave Minnesota.

It is bitterly cold. There are hardcore Midwesterners out here making their way in with trekking poles.
