A juvenile coot stands beside the lake in St. James’s Park in London. It is downy, charcoal grey, with a white chest and mostly black beak. It has the characteristic long coot toes, but not as elaborate as an adult’s.

The original novel of The Phantom of the Opera was born from a real life tragedy of a fire causing the counterweight of a chandelier to fall, injuring several and actually killing someone. There were also rumors that at least one ghost haunted the Palais. And that a faceless man lived in the lake under the Opera. The French author, Gaston Leroux, used the real life events and legends surrounding the place to inspire his novel.
