Author, Y2K: How the 2000's Became Everything (Essays on the Future That Never Was). The NYT called me “lean, nimble, and profoundly depressing,” but I think I’m pretty fun.

Six months ago I published my debut collection of essays, about coming of age in the Y2K era and the disappointment I’ve felt since. Here’s an excerpt at @slate.com about my 5th grade Y2K time capsule letter, my beloved silver inflatable chair, Aaliyah, and getting old slate.com/life/2024/12...

I learned from @lylerubin.bsky.social that “troops eat first” is a morale thing officers use in the military and this is, uh, not it

UPS says it is destroying parcels sent to US customers because the Trump administration is failing to process or clear the parcels through customs. In essence, no one can figure out what the applicable tariff rules are and how they are to be applied—amidst a deluge of contradictory tweets from Trump

Scoop from our student newspaper, who’ve been doing vital reporting www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2025...

Btw did you see that the pope denounced clickbait?!
coletteshade.bsky.social
Oh I agree with that too! I just don’t want that to mean “excluding everyone except Northern European immigrants who have been in the US since 1750”

But yeah like learning what a new ingredient does kind of takes time

I pretty much only bake with King Arthur, especially for baked goods
coletteshade.bsky.social
King Arthur is great but one time I got heritage whole wheat flour from a historic mill with a water wheel (!!!) and made the best biscuits I’ve ever had

I think they’re great too!! But they do have a fascinating history. Similarly, tennis is a great sport despite being used in the gilded age to facilitate socially appropriate courtship

Also does this mean that indigenous people get preferential treatment now?
coletteshade.bsky.social
Yep! At least the very fancy ones in Maine that were all mysteriously founded in the 1890’s and 1900’s. It came from a fear that WASP boys weren’t becoming men and WASP girls were not going to be healthy enough to have babies, due to modernity
