not because they aren't useful but literally just because their costs are so extremely high at this scale and there are so many free / self hosted alternatives I can't see the path they have to being profitable

everyone keeps bankrolling billions of dollars into the industry in the hopes it'll be profitable eventually... but you can run models at least as good as the private ones on your hardware for free...

and everyone just keeps ignoring that and spending

similarly, "nobody" could be a "none of the above" that does the same

if you look on the subreddit it's actually fucking insane. there are at least 10 different posts about this, and all of them have like 20k upvotes.

even the most stable people cannot see that much shit and go unscathed. if AI can prevent even just 5% of horrific media from being manually reviewed, that is a huge boon.

AI moderation actually is so crucial for saving the sanity of mods too. I don't think people really appreciate that *in order for a mod to ban someone, they have to see the content*

... be that extreme gore, NSFW content, or any worse thing you are imagining, you have to see it to ban for it
