In the Credit River Valley along the Culham Trail, golden sunlight spills across the early morning giving our wonderful blue jay a stand out appearance resplendent in his dress blues adorned with white and black markings. He spies you standing there on the trail taking in the gold brown woodland scene.

This common, large songbird is familiar to many people, with its perky crest; blue, white, and black plumage; and noisy calls. Blue Jays are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds. Their fondness for acorns is credited with helping spread oak trees after the last glacial period.

What did the Ruby-crowned Kinglet say to the Golden-crowned Kinglet? "All hail the king!".

Pretty sure this is a kinglet in any case, it's getting chilly and the sun's going down. See crop-in, via comments.

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is a tiny, energetic bird known for its constant wing-flicking. It is generally a plain green-gray color with a white eyering and a white wing bar. The male has a brilliant red crown patch, which is usually hidden and only visible when the bird is excited. These birds are smaller than warblers or chickadees and are found in coniferous forests across North America.

For a picture of that Ruby-crowned Kinglet, you'd have to get up close and personal with the tweet-lenses.

A kinglet is a tiny songbird, roughly sparrow-sized, known for its energetic and restless behavior, constantly flicking its wings. Two common species are the Golden-crowned Kinglet, identifiable by its yellow-orange and black striped crown, and the Ruby-crowned Kinglet, which has a red crown in males that is usually hidden. Both have a distinctive white eyering, olive-greenish plumage, and one or two white wing bars.

On this day in 1812, the Battle of Queenston Heights was fought.
Despite being heavily outnumbered, the British and Canadian troops, along with their Mohawk allies, defeated the American invaders. Major General Isaac Brock was killed in the battle.
