"My name is Hercule Poirot, and I am probably the greatest detective in the world because I am the one parents call when they realize their son did it."
Hercule Poirot probably from the BBC but honestly who cares

Haruki Murakami is probably pleased to see people dunking on a different person unlikely to win a Nobel.

I stopped, what, 19 wars? She didn't even stop me from blowing up her own country's boats. And they give *her* the Nobel Peace Prize?

I'm not sure I would trust the CDP to organize a lunch order, even in one of the most organized countries on earth, let alone an end run around the LDP.

Jazz OTD: Freddie Hubbard recorded the hard-bop classic "Hub-Tones" on October 10, 1962 with James Spaulding (as, fl), Herbie Hancock (p), Reggie Workman (b), and Clifford Jarvis (d). Reid Miles's brilliant cover design is even more iconic than usual on this one. #jazzsky

With its tale of Australian children and Russian demons, "Bring Her Back" is like Crocodile Dundee Meets The Exorcist Meets John Wick, but with Sally Hawkins playing all of those roles. It loses 1/2 star because of the pee jokes, but still a classic! 4 1/2 stars.

GREAT album

I got some fight, baby, take it to the head
I gives a fuck if it's permed or in dreads
Never snitch to the locals or the feds
See they tryna break us off so they don't have to break bread
'Cause Uncle Sam ain't the baker, he's the butcher
We all on punk'd with no Ashton Kutcher

Jazz OTD: Hank Mobley led one of his classic Blue Note sessions, leading to his album "Hi Voltage," on October 9, 1967. With Jackie McLean (as), Blue Mitchell (tp), an early-career John Hicks (p), Bob Cranshaw (b), and Billy Higgins (d). The irresistible album closer. #jazzsky

I can’t believe Bill Belichick’s career arc is going to go from most successful NFL coach ever to getting dumped by a college student.

Sorry for the garbled, auto-corrected alt-text. This push notification came from the Sankei Shimbun (not the "Snake Shimbun")

Jazz OTD: Pretty big contrast in titles between Tom Varner's album "Jazz French Horn," and this, its opening track, but the excellent ensemble work by Jim Snidero (as), Kenny Barron (p), Mike Richmond (b), and Victor Lewis (d) is consistent throughout. Recorded October 8-9, 1985. #jazzsky

One thing I love about Japan is that I get push notifications about things like Kitagawa Susumu winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. I know there are troubling nationalistic elements about it, but I like the fact that Nobel prizes in science are treated this seriously.
Push notification from the Snake newspaper saying that Kitagawa Susumu of Kyoto University was one of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Jazz OTD: It's possible that no musician had a more iconic, sustained peak on Blue Note than composer/pianist Andrew Hill, whose run of mid-1960s albums is consistently astonishing. "Compulsion" -- recorded October 8, 1965 -- has him leading a septet through percussive, meditative pieces. #jazzsky

Jazz OTD: Ornette Coleman recorded his brilliant "Change of the Century" on October 8-9, 1959 with his classic early quartet: Don Cherry (pocket trumpet), Charlie Haden (b), and Billy Higgins (d). This track, an all-timer, from the Oct. 8 session is a great place to start with his work. #jazzsky

One thing I should note about "One Battle After Another" is that Chase Infiniti looked far too old to be Leonardo DiCaprio's girlfriend, but then the movie made clear that she plays his daughter, so it was fine.

Widely viewed as the foremost director of his generation, Paul W.S. Anderson boldly steps away from the "Resident Evil" series with the comic action masterpiece "One Battle After Another," about an aging hippie who learns a little something: something called "growing up." Five Stars!!!

One Battle After Another review:

There are huge risks when one plays a widely beloved real figure, but Sean Penn utterly nails his role as Platoon Leader Pete Hegseth, motivated by psychosexual rage and deep insecurity. Make some room on your mantel for another Oscar, Sean!

Five stars.
