Jazz OTD: The one-and-only Thelonious Monk recorded two tracks for "It's Monk's Time," including this wonderful composition, on February 10, 1964. With Charlie Rouse (ts), Butch Warren (b), and Ben Riley (d). #jazzsky

Jazz OTD: Anyone who follows my feed knows that I love George Cables's work, and "In Good Company" - recorded February 10, 2015 - is a characteristically excellent piano trio session: by turns lyrical and propulsive, brilliantly played by Cables with Essiet Essiet (b) and Victor Lewis (d). #jazzsky

Jazz OTD: Here's the exceptional opening cut to "Free For All," recorded on February 10, 1964 by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers with one of the band's best lineups: Freddie Hubbard (tp), Curtis Fuller (tb), Wayne Shorter (ts), Cedar Walton (p), and Reginald Workman (b). Brilliant stuff. #jazzsky

Jazz OTD: Pianist Andrew Hill had a staggering run of mid-1960s Blue Note classics. Pax - recorded February 10, 1965 - sat unreleased until 1975, but the high-energy quintet date with Freddie Hubbard (tp), Joe Henderson (ts), Richard Davis (b), and Joe Chambers (d) is a rewarding affair. #jazzsky

I know everyone's still excited about Bad Bunny's great performance last night, but just a quick a note that a chastened, worried NFL is certainly going to overcompensate by having this group as next year's halftime performers.

Jazz OTD: One of my favorite saxophonists, the always adventurous Greg Osby, wrapped up his remarkable streak of risk-taking and beautifully played Blue Note albums with the excellent "Channel Three," recorded February 9-10, 2005 with Matt Brewer (b) and Jeff "Tain" Watts (d). First-rate. #jazzsky

Jazz OTD: Jim Hall's trio with Steve LaSpina (b) and Joey Baron (d) made extra space for an early-career Tom Harrell (tp, flugelhorn) on the excellent, often overlooked "These Rooms," recorded February 9, 1988 for Nippon Columbia. Gorgeous, with a few appealingly rough edges. #Jazzsky

Jazz OTD: As mainstream jazz was just starting to make a commercial comeback, two of its leading exponents - saxophonist Clifford Jordan and pianist Barry Harris - teamed up for Jordan's entertaining, assured "Repetition" on February 9, 1984. W/ Walter Booker (b) and Vernell Fourier (d). #Jazzsky

I could make a case - maybe not a great case - for Kid Rock, given the amount of sheer mirth he's generated

Pretty sure that that Poppi commercial is what most Turning Point USA kids want from their college classes

Was very surprised to see Kid Rock rap Pablo Neruda lines in the original Spanish

"Good Will Dunkin'" might have been the most painfully unfunny 45 seconds I've ever watched.

As long as they don't do that to the Turning Point USA alternative halftime show performers

Typically an explanatory guy and a second banana who agrees with everything. I think the baseball writers are more analytically savvy.

I think some of the local basketball and baseball announcing teams are actually pretty good, and more entertaining than their Japanese counterparts. But the national announcers are usually hopeless, with the Olympics being particularly dire.

I'm more disappointed than my daughter about Japan falling short of gold, but as Japanese/Italian-American, she's pretty content with a US-Japan-Italy set of medals.

I mean, I'm completely unqualified to weigh in on the quality of a figure skating performance in which no one falls face-first onto the ice, but it's not like as a once-every-four-years viewer I'm looking at it like, "my kid could do that"
February 8, 2026 at 9:25 PM
I love it when Olympic skating analysts add points like "this team works really hard," in case you though they were just half-assed winging it during a pair performance.
