A landmark European ruling!

No, it’s only recently been published in Japanese and it’s over 800 pages, so I’m afraid it’ll take a while…

It took her over three years to write it - and it is a masterpiece. It’s wonderful to see it getting such great recognition!

I’m absolutely delighted that Sayaka Murata has won the Noma Literary Prize for 「世界99」 (World 99), the novel published earlier this year that started as a serialized story in Subaru magazine and turned into a bigger beast than anyone had anticipated, including Sayaka herself.

Many sad stories from other countries around that time too. Whenever there is war, there are going to be a lot of sad stories. Not all of them will be told, but it’s important that some are.

I don’t think I ever saw your review of it. Did my translation change your view of it somehow? I should remember to check your website more often!

I guess my job is secure for a while, then!
Japanese literature shows why human translation still counts
AI and translation tech lower barriers to global communication, but literary translation requires the ability to convey tone, rhythm and cultural context.

I have some thoughts, but I’m thinking more of having a section on the website to air them - this would suit me better really, as I don’t plan to air them in a regular schedule, just when I feel like it.

Not really, but I’ll have a look. I intend to get a website up one of these days (been saying that for years ha ha!).

“I use it for brainstorming.” is quickly becoming my most hated pro-AI statement.

YOU TOOK YOUR BRAIN OUT OF THE EQUATION. THAT IS NOT BRAINSTORMING.

I’d been thinking about starting a Substack, but I guess I won’t after all!
Since people have asked why I don't start a Substack:
I have one; it's called a blog and it's at brainvsbook.com. Why would I let some company slap its brand all over my writing?? Especially when that company is fascist and transphobic! (Great summary of why Substack sucks in case you're unaware)
Don't call it a Substack. - Anil Dash

What on Earth is this? An "in depth" BBC article about free speech in the UK that only cites examples of right-wing/ 'anti-woke' speech being suppressed. How can you mention Lucy Connolly but completely ignore Palestine Action / Just Stop Oil? Gob-smacking. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
How the simmering UK freedom of speech row reached boiling point
How did we reach a point where the UK is being compared to a 'tin pot Third World dictatorship'?
