Blew off office work today to go help with a post-Davis Fire reseeding volunteer effort in Davis Creek Park organized by the park and Nevada Div of Wildlife/Forestry. Hopefully we get some precip to help all those grasses, forbs and shrubs come up!

What is a person supposed to do once they are denied access to their building, computer, files… you can’t just “stay”. Stay and do what?

Sending love to all the CDC folks who are experiencing a RIF today (and late Friday night a 3-day weekend, to boot). Scroll through the @altcdc.altgov.info posts from tonight to see the many affected offices. Thank you for your service. You are appreciated. We will get through this together.

PHIC - Public Health Infrastructure Center

Their job? Make public health infrastructure and workforce development actually work.

They help state, tribal, local, and territorial health agencies.

Y’know… everyone in the U.S. 🫠

They always do this sh:t on Friday, and it’s not the first long weekend, either.

It’s to increase the trauma, because the cruelty is the point.

Shut down but not silenced: Federal workers find their voice
After months of layoffs and funding cuts by the Trump administration, the government shutdown has given some federal employees hope that their voices are finally being heard.

A shutdown does not provide any additional authority to initiate a RIF. The question is whether existing authority would be sufficient. Three sub-issues. 3/7

A brief summary of everything I have written on RIFs to date. RIFs are insanely complex and procedurally difficult to implement. Most RIFs are challenged on procedural grounds. 1/7

Our nation's federal employees are more than just numbers on a spreadsheet.

They make sure we have clean water.

They protect us from financial fraud.

They provide healthcare to our communities.

They make our government actually work for people.

Do not forget this.

RIF UPDATE:

We @standupforscience.bsky.social are in communication with our network. So far, we have not heard of any actual RIFs, only Russ’ tweet.

To press—we will send a release and facilitate interviews if we do hear abt them taking place.

A park employee, who spoke with SFGATE on the condition of anonymity to protect their job, said they know of only one wilderness ranger working the entire park. And technically, that person is not even a ranger, the employee said, but a volunteer.

Government shutdowns offer a rare opportunity to un-submerge the submerged state. Something Democrats could/should be doing is every day of shutdown, pick some agency and focus on it for the day. Highlight what it does and what we're losing each day their staff are furloughed.

Thatʻs really interesting to think about. Birds love to eat (and disperse) mamaki (Pipturus albidus) in Hawaiʻi, though I could never figure out why. As far as I can tell, it is completely devoid of any flavor 😆
