I sometimes joke that I was trained by the jesuits.
As a punk rock dropout I met the bad-assed Michael Czerny who advised us about political organizing. He faced down death squads in El Salvador.
He married my wife and I.
He is the pope's right hand.

Meet the Jesuit Cardinal Behind Pope Leo’s Social Justice Revolution
From drafting Leo's first apostolic exhortation to championing migrants and the planet, Cardinal Michael Czerny is shaping the moral heart of this papacy.

Just sitting her thinking how amazing it would be if he flew to Chicago without telling anyone and walked to the ICE facility with the cameras rolling.

Speaking as an atheist: new favourite pope just dropped.

Stephanie "Tanqueray" Johnson, who went viral on the "Humans of New York" account by sharing stories about her life as a burlesque dancer in the 1970s, has died

I did know all of this, but sometimes it's hard to remember everything. And of course there are people who don't know at all.

This sort of thing needs to be printed and put in a wallet or pocket for the moment the mic is stuck in your face.

Utterly disgusting and sadly very indicative of this shameful, current moment in our history.

Ben Shapiro is SO CLOSE to getting it.
“It has the subtlety of a brick … The basic suggestion is a conspiracy theory in which the United States is run by white supremacist Christian nationalists and all people of color and a few nice incompetent fellow travelers like [DiCaprio’s character] are going to take on that entire system. And that system must be taken on at the cost of family, at the cost of friendship, at the cost of decency, at the cost of basic human capacity for success. It is better, in other words, to be a complete loser who wastes your life bombing things randomly in order to free illegal immigrants to run willy-nilly across the border than to be a productive citizen.”

When Rod Phillips still did Edmonton Oilers games on the radio his reaction whenever the Oilers scored was often referred to as an Oilersgasm and I would not have had it any other way.

Hoax, which I’m not sure is a shame or not. So many great lines.

Squats. “I only have eyes for you.”

And weirdly, a sequel to a movie from when I was 19 might be thought of as something that should at least partly speak to me. But Disney doesn't think so.

People in our age range tend to be the ones with nice home theatre setups. The younger crowd is satisfied, it seems, with laptops, phones, or in Brennan's case, a halfway-decent projector and computer speakers. But we're not the ones being targeted.

I imagine the cost of tickets has something to do with it. And worse, if you’re visiting. New York is becoming something like a theme park for many families.

...original movies, not based on earlier filmed IP or comic books. I mean, I enjoyed Superman and Thunderbolts and (kinda) Fantastic Four, thought the new Captain America was a dog's breakfast after regurgitation. But this year has felt sparkling and original, or had until Tron: Ares was released.

I'm so tired of this insistence on going back to the well, again and again and again. Disney is especially guilty of it, and as of late so very badly. Give me some originality, make it well, push it the right way. 2025 is going to be a fave year for me because there have been so many excellent...

I was 19 when Tron came out, saw it on the big screen and yeah, it was fun. But you know what else I saw in '82? ET, My Favorite Year, The Verdict, Tootsie, An Officer and a Gentleman, Diner, and a whole lot more, including some that spawned sequels (Blade Runner).

I'm perplexed at watching pundits in the trades struggling to explain Tron Ares' disappointing opening.

Was it covid? Do people just not like science fiction? etc. etc.

The main reason is pretty obvious: Tron isn't a popular franchise. Nobody's interested in nostalgia for a failed 1980s project.

Every year in Whitehorse they haul the floatplanes (the ones without wheels) out of the lakes etc and park them at the airport for winter.
