For what it's worth, technically it's pronounced "oos" in Latin. So really the score is 1-1 in the contest of fucking with people. Also, the original Greek was "kaktos", which was "spined" and referred to artichokes.

They were "majuscule littera" and "minuscule littera". Ironically, the word "letter" is a misspelling; it was originally "littera", which is why we have "litter bugs" who literally throw paper onto the ground.
