The ease with which officials lie in 2025 is honestly terrifying

CHICAGO (WGN) - A WGN creative services department employee was detained by two Border Patrol officers and later released after federal agents
swarmed a busy intersection on Chicago's North Side Friday morning, at the height of rush hour.
WGN is not naming the employee, as station policy requires blurring faces and not identifying those who have not been charged with a crime.
Witnesses on site who captured the incident on video spoke to WGN about the moments leading up to the staffer's detainment.

"Career prosecutors determined that there was no evidence to support these charges. They were pushed out and replaced with individuals whose only qualification is their loyalty to a single man, not to the Constitution or the law. That is corruption. That is abuse of power...we must all speak out."

INBOX: National Bar Association President Ashley L. Upkins calls the charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James “unjust and dangerous” and a representation of "the continued weaponization of our nation’s justice system for political gain."

How do you reconcile your takes that he should not be commended for taking liberal positions as a Democrat but then also arguing he is a conservative, and American conservativism falls squarely on the right wing of the Democratic Party?

The second take seems like nonsense.

The same administration that posts website landing pages and out of office messages specifically blaming Democrats for the shutdown considers an employee’s display of a desk flag a year ago, before Trump took office, to be objectionably political.
msnbc.com
EXCLUSIVE: FBI Director Kash Patel fired an agent in training for displaying a gay pride flag on his desk while appointed to a field office in California last year, according to three people familiar with the matter and a dismissal notice reviewed by MSNBC.

The FBI employee was fired on the first day of the government shutdown as President Trump threatened more terminations.

Rep. Lisa McClain, on CNN, praising President Trump for deploying the National Guard to Washington:

"My daughter could actually ride the Metro for the first time since she has been in DC."

Can that gender split be accurate?
dirtywork16.bsky.social
Democrats also did this. The judicial filibuster is long gone.
dirtywork16.bsky.social
Ya as is always true! The filibuster is a norm that can be broken at any time. Again, in 2013 this happened exactly!
dirtywork16.bsky.social
This is not exactly accurate. They do need Dem votes to avoid the shutdown. If Dems controlled everything, and GOP withheld Senate support (as has happened in 2013!), I'll bet we would object to a headline saying it was exclusively a Democratic shutdown.

Minkah was awful last year too. Don't know why it happened, maybe the injuries the year before, but he seems to have lost it.
dirtywork16.bsky.social
*reviles* Trump that should say.
dirtywork16.bsky.social
Agree. And part of it is that the coastal, pundit class is reviled by Trump and therefore think that his 45% ish popularity *must* be do to some colossal failure of the Democratic Party. They fail to see that for those 45%....the authoritarianism is liked or at least accepted.
dirtywork16.bsky.social
Exactly. I'd love to see the auyhor's "evidence" that the 18% swing in Hispanic margins was people turned off by Liz Cheney. Just ridiculous.

The Right is nakedly trying to make it illegal to call them fascists which is about the most obviously fascist thing you could come up with.
dirtywork16.bsky.social
We can and should be critical of reflexive centrists who think the answer to ever electoral loss is more centrism. But desperately seeking to argue (without evidence) that optimal electoral strategy should be basically this individual's policy (leftist) preferences... is no better & not productive.
dirtywork16.bsky.social
How can we read the first half of this paragraph and think this is an excellent piece? The second half of the paragraph is correct, but the leftist ranting in the first half is evidence-free itself! Plus no nod to Biden's pro union policies? Abundance is the product of "Billionaires"? Come on.

Agree with all of that. Just wish for the country's sake, he had gotten his way and wiggled out of it.

Although tbf, he tried as hard as he could to get out of the deal and NOT buy Twitter due to him making a bad deal, and was eventually forced to buy in Court. It's such horrible irony that he ends up losing money on this thing he didn't end up wanting....but damaged the country in the process.

Not sure how you square your acknowledgement that Trump's infamous comment on shooting someone on Fifth Ave and not losing voters was "right" with you being "reasonably sure" Democrats will win the next presidential election...

Today's decision being heavily criticized by Past Brendan Carr
Should the government censor speech it doesn’t like? Of course not.

The FCC does not have a roving mandate to police speech in the name of the “public interest.” Who, in your view, should have the power to draw the line between a “lie” and “free speech”? Government officials that want to stay in political power or the people that can hold them accountable ? President Biden is right.

Political satire is one of the oldest and most important forms of free speech.

It challenges those in power while using humor to draw more people in to the discussion.

That’s why people in influential positions have always targeted it for censorship. Free speech is the counterweight—it is democracy’s check on government control.

That’s why censorship is the authoritarian’s dream.

After all, there’s a straight line from the soap box to the ballot box. You retain freedom at both or neither.
