Same here. I don't have a lot of regrets in my life but one is that I didn't push back, and hard, on the war against "politically correct" speech & behavior every time someone made a "joke" about it. That seems to me when we began to lose civility & equanimity in public toward our fellow humans.

Bacon's Rebellion. The rich didn't want POC and the Poor to organize against them, so they started "White Supremacy" in an attempt to get the poor to turn on POC. It worked. It was also the birth of the term "white race" and from it a bigoted, racist, movement that has plagued us for decades.

I've wondered the same for most of my life. Recently read Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner's Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause (2020, byTy Seidule). It opened my eyes esp to how this culture is so blindly prone to cultish adoration of white men. It should be required reading.

I recently read "Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner's Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause" by Ty Seidule (2020), an eyeopener on Southern culture. I'll mention 2 things: the culture doesn't see people of color as fully human & it is primed to cultishness by inculcation of Lee as a divine hero.

His administrations are the culmination of decades of big $$ & Christian Nationalist efforts to subvert democracy. They are afraid of everyday people -- too many of us.

Commodity farmers (not the ones you meet at Farmers Markets) have a long, complicated history with the federal $. Big Ag depends on govt policies. The prez tanked these markets deliberately (including UN speech & USAID destruction). Just a hunch, I'm thinking oligarchs may be coming for their land?
