The problem with the so-called "nonviolence" of the Civil Rights Era is that it is misnarrated. The retelling in the "American myth of progress" version of the Civil Rights movement was that it was completely nonviolent.

That is not true. Plus let's call it its full name "nonviolent direct action"

Fun Fact:

It was racism that created the popularity of butter pecan ice cream. The South was so segregated they would only serve Black people vanilla ice cream on 4th of July (even Maya Angelou wrote about this). Vanilla was "pure" and "white."

Black people as always created an alternative.

1. You wanna know what's interesting about Pepsi making this decision? Pepsi literally made its fortune off the backs of Black people. (short 🧵)

Both Pepsi & Coke were created in the late 19th century. But while Coca-Cola was going on to become America's drink, Pepsi was bankrupt in the 1920s.

If my bestfriend were still alive, he'd be 42 today.

I stopped celebrating his birthday 10 years in, but I just realized this year makes 20.

How time flies

"In Fourteen Hundred Ninety Two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue..."

or whatever.

First off, the only Christopher i acknowledge is Wallace.

However, Columbus Day has a much darker origin story you may not know.

Let's talk Columbus Day 🧵
dytsras.bsky.social
15. But the fact of the matter is, Columbus Day was born out of white racism.

Which led to the lynching of 11 potentially innocent Italian-Americans who would spend the next several decades assimilating into whiteness

14. Today, Columbus Day has fallen out of favor with a large part of the community with most places opting to acknowledge Indigenous People's Day. This offends many people like President Trump, who want to make "Columbus Day Great Again!"

Because it makes us "less patriotic."
dytsras.bsky.social
13. There was even a Columbus statue installed in Central Park that later became known as Columbus Circle.

As Italians became more politically powerful over the years, they lobbied to have Columbus Day become an official American holiday, which it did in 1934
dytsras.bsky.social
12. On October 12, 1892, the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage, America would acknowledge a one time holiday for the Italian who "discovered America."

At this same celebration, the Pledge of Allegiance first appeared as well, which was coincidentally used as a "whitening tool" for the future

11. Italy was so upset with the United States that they recalled their ambassador, and rumors of war between the two countries started to spread.

Wanting to turn down the heat, President Benjamin Harrison made a deal with Italy.

To make it right, he proposed a holiday in 1892

10. Okay, if you've made it this far, you're probably thinking, "cool story, but what does this have to do with Columbus Day?"

Again, it was 1891. The next year, 1892, marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's "discovery" of America.

When Italy found out what happened, they were PISSED!
