flipped classrooms & the unquestioned shift toward “student-led learning” were also part of the deprofessionalization->adjunctification->mechanization program whose ultimate goal was a fully administrative university

The over-reliance on standardization as the mechanism for writing instruction really was a pretty unbeatable context to produce de-professionalized teachers okay with using AI to grade

Some reflections on Ed Wood, auteurism, and the differences between yesterday’s bad cinema and today’s corporate slop, in @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social

Oliver Evans reviews "Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood, USA" by Will Sloan: "The worst film by Ed Wood is more interesting than the best film by Ron Howard, Sloan argues, which is admittedly a checkmate."

oh yes, many times, and I’ve learned sufficient writerly humility to trust that even if I don’t *feel* grateful for every edit in the moment, this person is almost always doing me a tremendous solid

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

As an expert on help-seeking, I'm not surprised that AI makes it harder for students to develop strong relationships with teachers. Because AI means they can get help without asking an actual human teacher, but it doesn't address the distrust that makes it hard for many students to ask. 1/

“One of the negative consequences AI is having on students is that it is hurting their ability to develop meaningful relationships with teachers, the report finds. Half of the students agree that using AI in class makes them feel less connected to their teachers.”

Great call to arms by @cnewf.bsky.social, following the tactic of Jed Esty's "Future of Decline" by looking to Stuart Hall & the New Left, & urging us to forego "private agency within our universities" in favor of "collective agency by running them."
