Wow, wow, wow. This has always been legally possible but the law has virtually never been enforced — and now this is the SECOND case I've heard of in the last month (first involving a person with a green card) of a noncitizen being charged for failure to carry their papers.

I remember going to the first Women’s March in SF and being struck by how it just felt like a parade or charity walk or something. There was a planned route! I don’t think the 18th will be quite that, but yeah… right to peaceful assembly has turned into right to peaceful and orderly assembly

Shoutout to the Social Security Administration for being the agency that actually gives me helpful information of who to contact, what forms, etc and it's all broken down by country.

Would be a nice thing to include in the IRS publication about the US-Canada treaty, but hey I don't work in the gov.

I guess it could be worse. I could be like one of those people in this random thread I found of expats who make enough money to crunch the numbers on how much money to claim under the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion or as Qualified Business Income to save money but forget about the tax treaties.

Thinking about the UPS costs of updating a return and what that might involve and I might as well act the sucker and overpay the taxes because a few mailings would probably work out to almost as much and with way more hassle.

The official IRS made guide for international taxpayers did not mention that this was a requirement and made it sound like it was just something do do for your own records. But this detail is buried in the Schedule SE instructions, a form you don't actually have to file in this situation.
