I finally found one of my dream species! Beechdrops (Epifagus virginiana) are a parasitic plant that parasitizes off of Beech trees roots, and I think they are so cool! #botany #biology #nature

The creature of the day is the biggest crayfish I have ever seen! This thing was massive. The camera does not do it justice. Species Rusty Crayfish (Faxonius rusticus) #creek #nature #biology #crayfish

And no, I have almost no clue what these are. I think the two small white ones are a quartz of some kind, but that's all?

Today's activity! First time rockhounding! And my shitty little haul of some rocks that looked cool. (I got too distracted with the biology under the water to find more rocks...) #creeks #rocks #rockhounding #nature

Sometimes, parasitologists have to put their own body on the line in the name of science. In this case, a parasitologist played host to a nose leech for over a month to find out more about its life history 🧪

When it comes to parasitology, sometimes you have to get really up close with your study organism, as one researcher in Taiwan did in trying...

Excited to share our new paper on Kroyeria—a group of parasitic copepods found on sharks. Best part of the project was working with Greg Deets, who imo is the GOAT when it comes to copepod illustrations. We describe 5 new species & redescribe most others 🧪🦐

Line drawings of Kroyeria copepods. Left to Right: a copepod attached to shark gills, whole copepod, lateral view of a copepod head and thorax, central view of head region, detail of copepod maxilliped claw, at bottom left of image is a long, worm-like species named Kroyeria caseyi

nightjars are so cool are you kidding me
a Great Eared nightjar sitting on a branch looking like some fantasy creature. it is a bird with patches of light and dark brown coloration, little tufts of feathers on its head that makes it look like it has ears, and giant boba eyes a grey nightjar looks at the camera with its mouth partially open. its mouth and eyes are huge and it looks very surprised A nightjar is crouched with its wings in the air and its HUGE mouth wide open, seemingly in a defensive position. its feathers are a mottled mixture of cream, light brown and dark brown a side view of a brown and grey nightjar sitting asleep on a log. it almost looks to be a part of the log. go camouflage!!

Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread and wildly successful parasite.
This paper highlights its spread in the Arctic, and how it disproportionately affects the Indigenous populations living in that region. Below is the authors' video summary of the parasite's life cycle. 🧪
