If I wasn't afraid Simchat was going to get rained out by a tropical storm I'd just wait for Monday 🙃

This is true and they are super endangered by poachers who shovel them up by the hundreds and sell them at flea markets and shit. You should not buy the plants and if you happen to kick the poacher in the shins on accident, no one will hear about it from me.

still amazing to me the number of movies, games, etc. which have Venus Flytrap-based creatures in some form compared to the actual native range of Venus Flytrap, which is like, the great untamed jungles of a few wet pine savannas in North Carolina
map illustrating the native range of Venus Flytrap plants, just a little half circle around coastal North and South Carolina in USA

Services tonight are firmly lodged in the "I will be glad I went once I get there, but getting myself there will be like pulling teeth" category

Sometimes I wonder what this country might look like if we left “Letter from Birmingham Jail” in hotel nightstands instead of the KJV.

Because she hasn't been sworn in, Congresswoman-elect Grijalva can't hire a staff or set up an office. She can't *do* the "district work" that the Speaker thinks the House should be doing. Johnson is disenfranchising me and my neighbors, who have been without representation since March.

800,000 people in Arizona - including me - are being denied their elected representation in Congress.

A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.

"we are going to do a military coup, and also block our opponents attempt to make sure the military we are counting on loyalty from to do so get paid."

These are not the smartest fascists ever beaten by a frog.

The worst is that I am not even unemployed. I have to go to work, every day, because I am "essential". I am employed, working, just not getting paid.

Which means I don't even qualify for unemployment benefits. Or use the time looking for other work.

Also they are people with bills and families. Mass unemployment is generally bad for the economy.

Our nation's federal employees are more than just numbers on a spreadsheet.

They make sure we have clean water.

They protect us from financial fraud.

They provide healthcare to our communities.

They make our government actually work for people.

Do not forget this.

I know the LPSC community has been so close knit for so many years. If you take your cohort to a different meeting you can help create and continue that sense of community.

It's been very clear for *months* that Trump is trying to play up the idea of violent protests to prime federal cops for a weaponized response, despite all the actual evidence that protests have been peaceful UNTIL the cops arrive.

EXCLUSIVE — DHS Acting General Counsel sent out a memo Wednesday to all Federal Protective Service staff (the sub-agency that guards federal buildings) letting officers know they could take any action necessary "in the vicinity" federal property to protect themselves.

The Handbasket reports:
DHS top lawyer says 'no legal barrier' to actions officers can take to defend federal property
In a memo obtained exclusively by The Handbasket, Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers were given free rein.

Planetary scientists - we have a continual lament that goes like, waaah we have too many meetings how can we work and put in so many abstracts! Here's a solution! Choose a different meeting!
spacewhalerider.com
It's really disheartening to try to talk to colleagues about boycotting a conference that removed all its records of abstracts pertaining to DEI, only for the response to largely be "I don't want to go, but..." But what??? Each of us has agency! You can choose not to go!
emexastris.bsky.social
There is significant debate about that. Personally, they can go fuck themselves.
emexastris.bsky.social
They also manage/host several of the field's major conferences.
emexastris.bsky.social
They've also done a lot of other shit but that's one is easy to explain in one post and you can pretty much extrapolate from there.
emexastris.bsky.social
LPI is a major planetary science institution that, among other things, was/is a major repository of publications, and when Trump got sworn in they decided to take down any publication that related to "DEI". Like, ever.

I just saw a friend's post which was a commentary on her brother in law's post. He said "the government laid me off today" and my friend was like "No my dude, the WHITE HOUSE and the GOP Congress laid you off." The man is in her comments absolutely DYING on the hill that it's the "government."
