HUGE thank you to everyone who helped spread the word about iDigBio's new unnecessary chatbot, or who participated in the information webinar (even though they locked the chat, so there wasn't much we could do). I really do appreciate everything, sincerely.

you would think "dead bug organizer" would not provide one with many opportunities or influences to break the law. and yet!
mossworm.bsky.social
they forgot to lie over here! we're not even important enough to get our own propaganda...
USDA Web Soil Survey does not have anti-democrat propaganda, probably because the trumpies either don't know it exists or don't think anyone uses it
mossworm.bsky.social
I assume it's because they think there are a lot of trump-aligned farmers trying to use USDA websites to get credits or whatever that they can easily swindle with this crap. If you actually go into the applications, there's no warning, because I doubt they know there are applications lol
mossworm.bsky.social
it's not even consistent, like aside from the fact that "shutdown" is a noun and not a verb, the NRCS WSS (web soil survey) doesn't have the warning because whichever trumpite they had change all the websites probably doesn't even know it exists

can you all shut up for one second so I can find the ESD catalog
US Forest Service page says "The Radical Left Democrats shut down the government. This government website will be updated periodically during the funding lapse for mission critical functions. President Trump has made it clear he wants to keep the government open and support those who feed, fuel, and clothe the American people." I feel like universities should maybe have some kind of Actively Living Under Fascism clause that lets me take courses as pass/fail. There's state propaganda all over the websites I literally need to use for courses now, and I'd really rather not get immediately angry every time I have to find a PDF

they're restricted to just a few counties, and vulnerable to habitat destruction and poaching
mossworm.bsky.social
as long as I have the means to not immediately become homeless upon losing a job, I think I have no choice but to throw myself into the gears over and over
mossworm.bsky.social
quote from my boss at the government: "The law and what we do are two different things."
mossworm.bsky.social
there must be something that can be done about total nonsense like this? did the government not force everyone to violate the hatch act already?

(I honestly don't know. We never talked about what was illegal when I worked for the government, people just did whatever)
mossworm.bsky.social
it's not very comforting for me anymore to hear that so-and-so quietly hates what is happening. you have to loudly hate what is happening, and sometimes manually oppose what is happening, or it's all sausage.
mossworm.bsky.social
not to pick on the ten remaining USDA soil scientists or anything, this goes for everybody
mossworm.bsky.social
"the actual scientists probably did not want to do this, some non-science admin person is forcing them to spread propaganda"

okay, but, the propaganda is up there now. you're either working for the Ministry of Truth or you're not, yes?

"moss, why don't you consider working for USDA / FWS / some other US government scientific body?

look, I just don't think I would last very long

I'm sure lots of people at my past job are furious right now, too, but feelings alone don't accomplish anything.

department of agriculture was run by christo-fascists who all went to the same church or whatever, I don't have high hopes
mossworm.bsky.social
something something sometimes you have to keep your mouth shut instead of doing the right thing, and I would rather die

they are very good, taste similar to P edulis but the outside stays green
Passiflora incarnata fruit cut in half, with yellowish edible pulp and black seeds
mossworm.bsky.social
I have friends who overwinter their pet tortoises in the fridge and it's apparently comically easy
mossworm.bsky.social
yes! completely correct. P incarnata is also edible though and also weirdly hard to find for sale here
mossworm.bsky.social
honestly, leaving them outside in DC is probably pretty good as long as they're really wet. they also just don't get very big
mossworm.bsky.social
I would check one of the plant reddits for more info, but I think you just stick them in a bag for a few months and ignore them
mossworm.bsky.social
they're just like little cartoon mouths sitting on the ground among the pine needles, like the things that eat that guy in the Dark Crystal miniseries
wild Venus Flytrap plants are very low to the ground, easily hidden among grass and leaf litter
mossworm.bsky.social
I got to visit one of the places with actual live wild Venus Flytraps, and about a dozen nature dorks & myself all walked past them several times until someone pointed at one, about 1 cm tall and hiding meekly under a boardwalk
