I think both France and Britain played off one group against another in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine in order to maintain their rule under the Mandate.

"The storm irresistibly propels (the angel of history) into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress."

Walter Benjamin reflects in Theses on the Philosophy of History on Klee's Angelus Novus.

Yet memory often erases the complexities of the past as new national narratives are written to explain and justify the past.

A colleague once showed me a copy of an information pamphlet issued to British soldiers in Palestine in the 1940s. The pamphlet referred to 'Jewish terrorists'. The vicissitudes of history often change the definition of who is a terrorist and who is not.

[27 Jun 2025] @DrTedros at WHO media briefing:

“We cannot talk about COVID-19 in the past tense. Although the crisis has passed, the virus remains.

It continues to evolve, it continues to kill, and millions of people continue to live with post COVID-19 condition or long COVID.”

I suppose what matters is that both Israelis and Palestinians accept each other's right to exist and to live in peace and security. No single individual brings this about. The peace in Northern Ireland took years of bloodshed before both sides were ready to talk in good faith about the future.

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

I visited the @nmireland.bsky.social today for a bit of research, but I also took the opportunity to revisit the Words on the Wave exhibition, before it ends on October 24th.

It really is wonderful and you've only two weeks left, so do go and see it before it's gone!

A sandal, woven from grass and twigs, dated somewhere between 727- 771 years old was found in a vulture nest in southern Spain.

The agobia (sandal) was found along more than 200 other human artifacts, including some from the middle ages.
Found: 650-year-old shoe, in vulture nest
Many unexpected human artifacts have been preserved, for centuries, in vulture nests.
