I'm putting together a starter pack for people obsessed with Christmas: authors who have written about the holiday, people with a year-round appreciation of Christmas movies, yuletide folklore/history buffs - you name it.

Recommendations appreciated!

I remember the phone number for the rotary phone in the 200 year-old house I grew up in.

Some days I look at my cell. I could call it. There's a chance there's still a landline in that house and it'll ring. But... What if?

What if the one who answers is me, all those years ago? Better not risk it.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

I like being able to describe something like Star Trek as "science-fiction", instead of having to list all eight of those literary movements (along with two or three others) to gauge interest quickly.

I find genre to be an incredibly convenient and useful lie.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
The sequel's reviews aren't as positive, but I still really want to see it.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
Ha! Phantom Thread is far and away my favorite of the ones I've seen (though I actually haven't seen The Master OR Punch Drunk Love).
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
For whatever reason Italian Christmas movies seem to have a bad track record with getting US releases.

I'm still waiting on that Legend of the Christmas Witch sequel....

There's no movie so good a reasonable person can't hate it or so bad a reasonable person can't love it.

I like *most* of the PTA movies I've seen, but they're definitely not for everyone.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
Looks like that one also isn't technically set at Christmas, but Christmas in August is still Christmas. On the list it goes.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
I've seen all but two of the movies on the right, and I'm 90% sure one of the ones I haven't seen (Happy Feet 2) isn't set at Christmas.

It's entirely possible I'm adding A Sudden Case of Christmas to my watchlist this very minute....

It's an impressive, influential movie, so I wish I enjoyed Jacob's Ladder more. But the real question in cases like this is whether it counts as a "Christmas movie", and the answer this time is COMPLICATED. #filmsky

This will sound like a joke, but it's not: the frustrating thing about watching *really* low-budget movies is the difficulty of finding out who made something and why.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
Nope, but I'll take the compliment.

I can help.

Step 1: Drape the tie around the back of your neck.

Step 2: Spend the next five years traveling the world, studying with the greatest tie tiers alive, mastering their arts.

Red Snow is FAR closer to taking the #2 spot than it should be, considering the budget. It might even jump on rewatch. I really like that one.

There's a football field between it and 30 Days of Night, though.

Christmas vampire movie ranking:
Cronos>Nosferatu (2024)>Red Snow>30 Days of Night>Silent Bite>Two Front Teeth

There's an argument Requiem for a Vampire might count, but the holiday setting is dubious. It'd go either before or after 30 Days of Night, depending on the day.

Low budget horror is always hard to review, though the AI opening credits sequence makes me feel a little better about not recommending "Silent Bite". Aside from that opening, this isn't bad for what it is and even includes a couple good bits... just not enough to overcome its issues. #filmsky

At this point, I've stopped trying to fight it. Cast him in all the movies. Make the Morbius/Kraven crossover, but cast him as Kraven, too. I don't even care anymore.

The scenery would have been the draw even if they'd hired someone people liked. No one goes to see a Tron movie for the story or actors. People go for.... Actually, for the most part no one goes to see Tron movies.

The highest grossing movie in Jared Leto's filmography remains Suicide Squad, a critically panned production with the consensus being that he was the worst part of the movie.

1. Has Hollywood finally learned you can’t build a franchise around Jared Leto?
2. ROOFMAN’s opening seemed inevitable after CAUGHT STEALING flopped.
3. KOTSW needed to play the fall festival circuit before receiving a holiday platform release to build buzz and momentum.

I haven't seen nearly enough of his movies to offer an informed opinion, but I did recently see Red Eye and it was quite good.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
And I want Dom Torretto there. And maybe Dr. Jekyll from the Tom Cruise Mummy movie.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
Not sure I agree about the location shift, though: I feel like they did everything they could do on the Grid in Legacy, so they might as well set the sequel in Vancouver.

Or even better, in Jurassic Park. I'd actually care if it was set on Ilsa Nublar.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
See, I'm the opposite: I love Leto, I just never really got into Tron.

No, wait, I also hate Jared Leto. He sucks.

But I also don't really care about Tron.
erinlsnyder.bsky.social
If you see this, QTP with a movie that deserves a sequel 🎥

I'm hearing mixed things about the new Tron. A lot of people are saying they're not seeing it because of Leto, but others say they don't care about Tron.

Truly a divisive movie.
