I'm putting together a starter pack for people obsessed with Christmas: authors who have written about the holiday, people with a year-round appreciation of Christmas movies, yuletide folklore/history buffs - you name it.

Recommendations appreciated!
See, they should have gone with their original idea, "The First Film."

Has a better ring to it.
Not to trot out the “people will tweet anything” meme, but…

The kid wanted to see KPop Demon Hunters, so I wound up rewatching it. I still have reservations with the unintended subtext, but that being said... Jesus, they did a good job with this thing.

I wonder if one movie is allowed to get every nomination for Best Song...

Gave this one serious thought. I think the answer is Scrooge (1935), because it started a chain reaction that transformed the way I look at and think about movies.
What movie are you most thankful for? (not necessarily your favorite!)

I'd never read or seen any version of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever." A day before watching the acclaimed 2024 movie, I figured I should read the original book, since we had a copy and it's extremely short. Here's why that was a big mistake. #filmsky

No matter how talented, no one who does anything like this should ever again be trusted with the kind of power producers and directors have, but it's also worth remembering Brett Ratner was one of the worst filmmakers of his day. Just an absolute hack. Awful.
Brett Ratner outed Eliot Page as gay (before Page came out as a trans man,” is accused by six women of sexual assault and harrassment, and in 2018 lost all his deals with WB. Now Trump and his fellow rapists and rape apologists are demanding Ratner be fully funded to make movies.
its so weird how everyone connected with trump has SA allegations in their history

Hey! My book is now on sale everywhere (you’ll probably have better luck getting it online than from bookstores, alas), but come buy a signed copy at one of the following events! Thread:

Sigh.

I know this is a joke. I get the joke. But I've heard it before, and it makes it all the more difficult to get people to engage with movies like Ronin, 101 Dalmatians, Scandal (1950), etc. as ACTUAL Christmas movies.

I think the easiest way to resolve this traffic jam is for everyone to abandon the city, rebuild elsewhere, and allow nature to reclaim Oslo.
So this happened in Oslo yesterday. Four articulated buses got stuck in a roundabout.

I don't know a damn thing about the Jonas Brothers, but I know a good Christmas comedy when I see one. This was far better than I was expecting and absolutely worth checking out. #filmsky

Selling Out Santa: Hollywood Christmas Films in the Age of McCarthy is about how uniquely American cultural media changed as a result of federal influences on Hollywood in the 40s/50s.

I fought for Open Access because media & propaganda literacy are essential right now.

My new & first book, Selling Out Santa, is Open Access!

If you like what you read and can, please consider buying a copy for you and maybe one for a history/film lover at Christmas (it's 40% off)!

It'll likely be my only income in over 2 years once royalties pay next July, so please consider it!

Christmas is not just a day or a frame of mind as Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) imparts in Miracle on 34 th Street (1947); Christmas is also a vehicle for national mythmaking as an idealising mirror for...

I got nothing to add to this. 10/10. No notes.
LucasFilm: Muppet Star Wars

Marvel: Squirrel Girl

Warner Bros: Batgirl (just finish it)

Paramount: Star Trek Lower Decks - The Movie

Universal - Key and Peele Meet the Universal Monsters

Blumhouse: Twelve Days of Purge-mas

Lionsgate: A Very Step Up Wedding

Pixar: The Queerest. Movie. EVER.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

In keeping with the theme I figured it was time to rewatch this bit of forgotten 90's cinema.

The first half is actually good, and if it hadn't dropped the bit and started acting semi-serious...

It still probably would have bombed but maybe everyone wouldn't look at me funny when I say I like it.

"Animal Tales of Christmas Magic" is a beautifully animated all-ages anthology that deserves a place on the short list of great Christmas animated movies. If you have Kanopy, you can most likely watch it for free right now. #filmsky

Okay, it's just going to be easier if we get a count of Bluesky users who *don't* feel called out by this post.

Anyone?
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

"Nothing Like the Holidays" features an impressive cast, but it's a bit too disjointed to be one of the better dysfunctional holiday dramedies. #filmsky
