At an event last night, an older woman gave me a mix CD she’s been making every year for friends. I find it delightful that someone is still making mix CDs to give to people at dinner parties, and that I am still invited to cute parties.

I was talking to some educators today about how best to train young filmmakers. They had a grant and decided to buy high-level equipment for filmmaking but nothing for data transfer or editing. I was vehemently opposed.

Even just a name can put in motion efforts that get someone released. If they're a citizen, we can get them jail support. If they're an immigrant, there are groups working overtime to file habeas petitions before they're whisked out of state. But it starts with a name.
If you see one, the most important thing to say is “WHAT’S YOUR NAME” because otherwise the person is gone for good, maybe. I witnessed one in an alley as the sole pursuit car, I was the only witness, I froze for a second and didn’t shout it in time, and the guy is just… gone now. I’ll never know.

Looking for a doc filmmaker to teach middle-schoolers in point reyes - Wednesdays 1:30-3pm, for 17 weeks until May 27th. The original teacher had an emergency and had to quit, leaving these kids without their class. Would love to help them out!

I have no love for Meta and their products, but I am devastated that so many of my friends are losing their livelihoods and that their art and years of work are being abandoned for the AI nonsense Meta is chasing.
Update: Meta has shut down three game studios and laid off all employees.

This is wild - I "knew" Joybubbles as a contributor to the wonderful Bulletin Board column in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Which was kind of like the internet before the internet, people calling and leaving messages that the editor would then curate and edit and compile. I used to contribute, too.
This is why david strathairn's character in Sneakers is named "Whistler". Also, that character is based on a real guy, joybubbles, who is in _Exploding the Phone_ and who ALSO turns up in Tom Junod's famous Mister Rogers article as a blind superfan who goes on a pilgrimage to pittsburgh.
