Every president from Nixon on released their tax returns, but Trump -- who insisted he would follow that custom -- repeatedly refused to do that. So finally they were leaked, showing he paid only $750 in 2016 and nothing in 2017.

He's now demanding all of us, who *did* pay our full taxes, pay him.
Donald Trump’s frivolous $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over his leaked tax returns, if he were to win or get a settlement, would be paid entirely by U.S. taxpayers. trib.al/eiYvT8m

This is some bullshit. Never enter any contest like this.
Venerable magazine Harper's Bazaar is running its short story contest again, with the winner receiving "the chance" of publication in the magazine. Just one catch: per the wording of the guidelines, _just by entering_ you transfer copyright ownership of your story to Harper's parent, Hearst. 1/3

Why movies have a much harder time becoming "classics" in the streaming age

"Cable television rewarded inertia. Streaming rewards decisiveness. If you don’t actively choose a film, it essentially doesn’t exist. Once you’ve watched it, the system will not resurface it"

"This is how men behave."

Nope. Don't drag the rest of us into your world, creep.
This is the Yale professor's explanation for why he described the physical attractiveness of a student in an email to Epstein. He explicitly says he regrets nothing about their association.

Again, I'm so happy Yale hired David Brooks to restore trust.

It's very strange that there are people here who are arguing that these demands amount to nothing.
in real terms, #7 would give states leverage to put an end to surges, #8 would give states the ability to outright stop construction of new detention facilities, #1 and #6 would slow the rate at which DHS could train and deploy officers, #2 and #10 would likely shrink the pool of recruits
Schumer & Jeffries lay out the Democratic demands for a DHS funding deal in a letter to the top Republican leaders

Trump seems to have napped through most of this
wow -- with Trump standing behind him, a man (not sure who he is) offers this prayer: "We pray that he would be mindful of the poor and that he would be invested in the alleviation of suffering happening in the families preparing to bury their loved ones in Minneapolis."

I wrote about the origins of the National Prayer Breakfast in ONE NATION UNDER GOD as a deliberately non-partisan event that sought to transcend party politics, so watching Trump treat it like a campaign event is always a little odd.
Trump at National Prayer Breakfast: "They rigged the second election. I had to win it. I needed it for my own ego. I would've had a bad ego for the rest of my life. Now I really have a big ego. Beating these lunatics was incredible ... The first time they said I didn't win the popular vote. I did"

If you're nervous about the midterms, channel that energy into helping secure them.
as i keep saying, the things to do to secure elections are to volunteer to work the polls or to serve as an observer, & to pressure your *state representatives* to take steps to further secure voting locations and ballots. you should also learn about how election administration works in your area.

The presidential oath of office includes a vow to "preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution, but this one is literally mocking other leaders for doing just that.
Trump on Minnesota: "If we didn't have to fight this horrible governor and this horrible fake mayor -- Frey. 'This is the Constitution of the United States.' People don't want to be mugged!"

One way for the media to win back the respect of viewers would be for them to show us that they have some self-respect of their own.

When you let the president denigrate and humiliate your colleagues without saying a word, you're not really giving off a "holding the powerful to account" vibe
Trump's constant degradation of female reporters is unsurprising but the press corps' collective decision to treat it as background noise is actually kind of sickening
