Saying that they literally can’t even when they try sounds as much like we’re making wealth an innate characteristic in a negative way as insisting they MUST be smart or good. People really can change.

What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

Democrats should really learn the concept of "realized preference." There's a difference between what people say and what actually moves them. The latter tends to be more emotional.

Part of it is people don't know what they want. Part of it is they want the pollster to see them as "rational."
