Last month I spoke on a panel with Danae Shell, founder of valla.uk.

They're great at helping workers get what they're owed... unless the business directors do this One Weird Trick @mellino.bsky.social writes about, which effectively cancels a tribunal award.

Cool cool. Good system. 👍

The global economy? But that's where I live!

Tesla is now selling a Model 3 Turn Signal Stalk Retrofit for $595. 😳

An expensive upgrade to bring back what they removed: the classic turn signal stalk. 🫣

First create a problem, now sell the solution for a premium. 💸

Innovation is important but great UX makes users’ lives easier, not harder. 😉

feels like yet again time to mention that the *videogames* industry (that's a creative industry, which people do creative degrees in) brings in more than twice the amount to the British economy as the fishing and steel industries *combined*

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Bike struggled to rev over 5k rpm. Pulled carbs, found the issue.

36 years of vibes had abraided the CV carb slides in their holders in such a way that the front slide hit a teeny tiny friction increase halfway up.

Cleaned & swapped the slides between carbs (not the needles!): problem fixed.

Storm Amy may disrupt a lot of things, but it also blasted the UK grid with 20gW of wind power and made my electricity free for like two days, so it's impossible to say if it's bad or not.
A piece chart of UK national grid electricity generation from today. Renewables make up 75% of the electricity generated at 21.8GW An % area graph showing electricity generation over the day. Renewables makes up 70-80% of generation throughout most of the day. A pie chart showing energy distribution in North Scotland. The current carbon intensity is 0gCO2/kWh. The pie chart shows 100% energy coming from wind. A bar chart showing half-hour energy pricing. A significant number of half hour periods are below 0p.

This is 11 minutes of Matt Berry and Jermaine Clement presenting a new synthesiser thing. I think it might be one of the finest pieces of video production I've seen this year. By the team at Love+Money.

My video calls have dropped to like 10fps. But it's probably fine cos I only use my computer for that for about 5 hours a day, and only for important clients who I'm trying to impress

Stressful week gone. Stressful week to come. But spending the in-between meandering through quiet autumnal forests helps a bit.
Tall pines filter pale autumnal sunlight onto a vibrant green forest floor. A boy standing on a wall in the foreground looks into the forest. A piece of distance forestry machinery is just visible between the trees in the middle distance. A wide needle-strewn, sun dappled forest path recedes away from us. Small beech trees are illuminated by afternoon sunlight, appearing to almost glowing bright green on the right hand side of the path. On the left of the path, dark trunks of tall pines. A woman, a dog, and two children are silhouetted and framed by trees against a bright reservoir. A distant dam wall bisects the image. Late afternoon sunlight falls between trees onto a tangle of verdant undergrowth around a small stream.

Yup! There's a little car park east of Lamberton, next to a bridge over the railway, and then a lovely coastal walk down to the site. Go at low tide!

It's well documented that local corruption is inversely correlated with the strength of local journalism. It's the tireless work of people like @jim.londoncentric.media, @edinburghminute.bsky.social and the broader work of the @bylinesnetwork.co.uk which gives me some hope for the future in the UK.
