both the Ross Sea Party deaths AND the amputations are in pretty much every reliable historical account of the expedition, including Shackleton's own book "South". For instance: "Blackborrow, whose toes were so badly frost-bitten in the boats, had to have all five amputated while on the island."
farsouthhistory.bsky.social
Well, Perce Blackbarrow had toes amputated on Elephant Island, while waiting rescue. Also, of course the 3 men died during the Ross Sea Party. But this new research of course suggests that Shackleton knew his ship was weak, but took it anyway.

Not every ship trapped in the ice sank; the famous example is the Belgica, which spent the winter trapped in the ice, freed by summer weather/dynamite. The Resolute was trapped and abandoned on the Arctic, then recovered. The Fram was designed to be trapped in the ice intentionally

New article just published from the ‘Queer Northern Ireland: Sexuality before Liberation’ project. Charlie lays out in brilliant (and often depressing) depth how the complex forces of psychiatry and religion shaped the responses to male homosexuality in the decades after WWII.

“I knew that homosexuality was a sin - I didn’t want to be homosexual. I went to my G.P and said I had read Freud’s book on dreams, that I suffered from homosexuality, and that I would like to change.”

My new article now out in Irish Historical Studies:
