Seeing pictures of an abandoned tamale cart in Pilsen where ICE took a tamale street vendor. Those photos of left behind carts are so haunting. Community members disappeared. Not just vendors but people who have long standing relationships with the community and people.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a mother is never easy, even when it’s expected or they are comfortable. They do teach us to be. My mom passed away 2 years ago & that hollow feeling is still felt. The missing and grieving are so hard. Talk about her, and she’ll continue to be present with you.

I just got off a call with a group of young people who were seeking some guidance for a project they have launched in their community. Folks, I can tell you that we are blessed in this generation. They are smart and importantly so damn compassionate. ALSO, they know more than we did at their age.

As a Texas teacher in 2025, exposing students to stories of folks who made sacrifices that will impact generations of their family feels especially important.

Now my most favorite lines are "thank you/gracias for surrendering the past tense/ of
your life so that I might conjugate myself here/in the present of this country" (lines 29-31). Those
are words I wish to tell my parents one day due to them giving up their life in Mexico to be able
to create my life here in the US. They gave me more than what they ever had growing up and I
will always be forever grateful.

Signs of the times in Chicago today: My daughter's school went on soft lockdown because of reports of ICE. Volunteers showed up at the nearby H.S. to escort people who didn't feel safe. Walking around, I saw lots of orange whistles around people's necks.
