Chicagoan, sociologist of race and immigration in training, former writer on transportation equity issues, currently always curious.
So many stories coming to light about the treatment of Latinos and other immigrants in the last few months. I am always horrified to hear of new details of detainees at Broadview processing center in Chicago, especially during the months of Operation Midway Blitz.
The horror stories rolling in from Minnesota are just the tip of the iceberg. This 20-year-old, who's lawfully present in the country, was arrested for being Latino, then jailed in a filthy cell where he couldn't even sit down. 18 days of illegal detention. democracyforward.org/wp-content/u...

Sad to see the Southwest Side becoming an Amazon logistics corridor. Means more truck traffic and unsafe streets. This is while communities try to become more bikeable and pedestrian friendly.

This reminds me of strategies I heard about in Chicago in the fall when residents were detained by ICE through deception. One was lured with a phone call about a prize and another lured by supposed scrap metal available for pickup.
CCTV footage appears to show DHS agents posing as people having car trouble in order to lure a target out of his house before arresting them. The target comes out and starts helping them before 3 vehicles surround the scene. The car "experiencing" trouble then drives off with them.

“Fewer customers have been coming to D’Nuez Mexican Fusion in Brighton Park, since last year’s immigration raids in Chicago. But on Wednesday, a group of about 20 people had lunch at D’Nuez, 4125 S. Archer Ave., then visited nearby small businesses in the Southwest Side neighborhood.”

I don’t mind walking up the stairs to the train platform sometimes. I’d love the option to take an escalator if they ever worked where I board.
